Bradford White Error Code 62: Fan Speed Not Proved (eF Series)
What the code means
Bradford White's eF Series service manual (238-54464-00) and its ICON HD quick service guides (238-55958-00 and 238-55603-00) define code 62 as "Fan speed not proved." The control drives the combustion blower with a PWM (pulse width modulation) signal and reads the blower's speed back through the 5-wire modulation harness at the J2 connection. If the speed doesn't match, the heater sits in a hold condition instead of lighting. The service manual says that if the blower speed isn't verified within 5 minutes, code 62 changes from a hold to a lockout, which Bradford White lists as 123 (fan speed not proved, purge rate proving failed); 122 is the related light-off rate proving failure. The heater's normal sequence starts the blower at a reduced "soft start" speed and runs a pre-purge of about 15 seconds before ignition, so a blower that can't reach or report the right speed stops the sequence at that step. Code 62 on the eF Series is not the same as codes on Bradford White's Infiniti GS and GR tankless heaters, whose error tables have no code 62.
Likely causes
- A blocked or restricted vent or air intake pipe or termination (Bradford White's first listed check)
- The 5-wire blower modulation (speed signal) harness unplugged, loose or damaged at the blower or at the J2 connection on the control board
- Pin terminals in the harness connectors not making solid contact
- A failing combustion blower
- A failed control board (Bradford White lists it as the second possible part, after the blower)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Go outside and check the vent and air intake terminations for blockages such as leaves, nests, snow or ice, and clear them if you can do so safely.
- Make sure nothing is stacked against or covering the intake and exhaust pipes near the heater.
- Note whether the code shows as 62 only or has moved on to 123, and tell your technician; 123 means the hold has turned into a lockout.
- Don't keep resetting the heater if the code returns. Bradford White's manuals warn that resetting lockouts without fixing the cause can create a hazardous condition.
- Wiring and blower checks involve 120-volt power, so leave those to a qualified technician.
๐ When to call a pro
- Check for vent and intake restriction, then confirm vent length is within specification.
- Check the blower modulation (PWM) wire harness connection from the blower to the control module at J2, make sure the pin terminals make solid contact, and measure the resistance of each wire in the harness from the terminal ends. Replace the harness if it's defective.
- With the display showing "Heating" (raise the setpoint if needed), check for 110 to 120 VAC between the black and white wires of the 3-wire harness at the blower. If the display shows heating and there's no voltage at the blower, the service manual says to verify 120 V from the power switch and replace the power cord or blower harness.
- If the blower runs, Bradford White's chart has you measure between the yellow wire at J2 and ground for 17 to 30 VDC and confirm the 5-wire modulation harness is plugged in to the blower (if it's unplugged, the blower runs constantly). Depending on those results, the chart ends at replacing either the blower or the control board.
- Bradford White's blower test also checks amp draw on the blower's black lead (about 1.5 to 5.5 amps) and that the blower wheel is secured to the motor shaft.
