GE Microwave F3 Error Code: Stuck or Shorted Touchpad Key (How to Clear It)

What the code means

GE Appliances uses F3 the same way across its microwaves, described from two angles. The owner's manual for GE countertop microwaves (49-40784-1) and GE's microwave drawer error-code article both say "F3" appears when a key has been activated for more than 60 seconds: press Cancel/Off to clear the display, and note that this can happen if liquid is on the control panel, so dry the panel thoroughly after cleaning. GE's support article "Microwave - Error, Fault or Function Codes", which lists the fault codes built into its microwave oven controls for technicians, defines F3 as a shorted touch pad panel, and GE's 240-volt Advantium list gives the same definition. Both point to the same thing: the control sees a key contact closed for too long. That can be temporary (a spill, cleaner sprayed on the panel, condensation, something resting on a key) or permanent (a touchpad membrane that has shorted internally). GE says shutting off the breaker or fuse that feeds the microwave for 30 seconds sometimes clears a fault code, but that some cases need service. On a GE microwave, F3 is not the same as LOC (the control lock is on) or PF (a power failure occurred), and other GE F codes point to sensors: F1 and F2 are the thermal sensor, F4 and F5 the humidity sensor.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Press Cancel/Off (or Clear/Off on some models) to clear F3 from the display.
  2. Wipe the control panel with a dry cloth and let it dry fully. GE says to wipe the panel with a damp cloth only and dry it thoroughly, and not to use cleaning sprays, large amounts of soap and water, abrasives or sharp objects on it.
  3. Make sure nothing is pressing on any key, then try a short timed heat with a cup of water.
  4. If F3 comes back, turn off the circuit breaker or fuse that feeds the microwave (or unplug it) for 30 seconds, restore power and try again.
  5. If the panel got wet, leave the microwave off for several hours so moisture behind the touchpad can dry before you test it again.
  6. Don't open the case or peel off the touchpad. Microwaves hold a high-voltage capacitor that can stay charged even when unplugged.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F3 keeps returning after the panel is dry and the breaker has been off for 30 seconds: schedule service. A shorted touchpad is replaced as a part matched to your model number.
  • The microwave starts, beeps or changes settings on its own, or keys stop responding: stop using it and have the touchpad and control board checked.
  • F3 appears along with other F codes, a burning smell or sparks: turn off the breaker and call for repair.
