GE Washer Error Code 32: Can't Unlock the Door (Front Load, Also Code 77)
What the code means
GE Appliances' Technical Service Guide 31-9327 for UltraFresh front-load washers (GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 models) lists fault codes 32 and 77 as "Critical door Lock Failure: Can't Unlock Door", with the trigger condition "Cycle canceled due to inability to unlock door." GE's newer front-load guide 31-3000358 uses the same wording for 32 and 77. The door lock assembly holds both the door switch and the locking solenoid. The guide explains that the control pulses the lock coil, waits about a second to read whether the lock changed position, and retries: up to three tries, a 30-second cool-down, four more tries, and then a 180-second cool-down before it sets a critical lock fault and cancels the cycle. Sears PartsDirect's GE GFW code chart lists 32 or 77 as "Can't unlock the door" and points to the door lock/switch wiring and then the lock assembly. Normally the door unlocks a few seconds after you press Start/Pause, and in some cycles GE says the washer drains first before it unlocks, so a short delay alone isn't a fault. On these models stored codes are read in Consumer Fault Code Mode: from idle with all lights off, hold Start for 10 seconds until all lights come on, then press Start to step through the codes.
Likely causes
- The door is sagging or binding on the latch, so the lock can't move freely (GE's guide says to lift the door until it closes freely, and the newer guide says to check the hinges for sag)
- Lint, a coin or other debris blocking the door lock or strike
- A loose, damaged or corroded wire in the harness between the control and the door lock
- A failed door lock assembly (the lock solenoid or its position switch), the most common fix GE and Sears PartsDirect list
- Less often, a control board that isn't sending 120 VAC to the lock when it tries to unlock
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Find your model number (on a tag inside the door opening). GFW models are GE front loaders; this code applies to them.
- Wait a minute before doing anything. In some cycles the washer drains first and then unlocks, and GE says the door can take a few seconds to unlock after you press Start/Pause. Don't force the door while the Locked light is on; GE warns that can damage the washer.
- Reset the controls: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) for at least 30 seconds, GE's general reset guidance is 2 minutes, then restore power and press Start/Pause to see if the door releases.
- If water is still in the drum, run a drain and spin once the controls respond, then try the door again.
- Once the door is open, look at how it closes. If it drops or has to be lifted to latch, the door or hinges are sagging. Clean any lint or debris out of the latch opening and around the strike.
- Unplug the washer and check that the harness plug on the door lock is fully seated. Sears PartsDirect's first step for 32 is checking this wiring; if it's fine, the lock assembly is the likely part.
- If the door stays locked with clothes inside, GE's service guide says the lock can be released by removing the washer's top panel, reaching down to the bottom of the lock assembly and pushing in its button. Only do this with the washer unplugged, and leave it to a technician if you aren't comfortable removing panels.
๐ When to call a pro
- Code 32 or 77 keeps returning after a reset. GE's guide calls for replacing the door lock and its harness, then confirming with the service mode spin test.
- Testing the lock: on GFW models the guide says that with the door closed and locked, pins 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 on the lock read about 127 ohms, and with the door unlocked and open they read open. Readings outside that mean the lock should be replaced.
- Checking the control: GE's guide says to confirm about 120 VAC to the lock (at J513 on GFW models) while it's being activated. No voltage with a good harness points to the control board.
- Sagging door hinges, which need the door adjusted or the hinges replaced so the lock can move freely.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
GE washer door lock assembly (exact part for your model number)
The usual fix when code 32 or 77 keeps coming back and the door, latch and wiring check out. Look it up by your full model number.
Search eBay โDigital multimeter
For checking the lock's resistance and the harness continuity with the washer unplugged.
Search eBay โWasher control board (exact part for your model number)
Only if a technician confirms the board isn't sending voltage to a good lock and harness.
