Hotpoint Washing Machine F12 Error Code: Electronic Control Fault (Machine Won't Turn On)

Reviewed 2026-10-26 ยท Based on 3 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Hotpoint UK's washing machine error code guide lists F12 as "Electronic control fault", with the symptom that the washing machine is not operating (turning on), and the advice to call Hotpoint on 0344 822 4224 to book an engineer. Hotpoint and Indesit machines sold in the UK share the same electronics, and Indesit's technical documentation for the WIL10 platform (a French service file) gives the engineer's definition: F12 means there is no communication between the display/LED board and the power board. The service steps, in order, are: check the contacts of connector J11 on the power board; check the continuity of the wiring between connector J11 and the 5-way connector on the display board; replace the power board; and only then replace the display/LED board. Connector numbers can differ between Hotpoint ranges, so treat them as a guide and follow the wiring for your model. In practice the cheap check is the plug and cable linking the two boards, which can work loose after the machine is moved or be damaged by damp. For contrast, the same Hotpoint guide lists F09 as a software fault (multiple flashing lights, unable to select a programme) and F01 as an electronic circuit board fault where some or all functions can't be selected, which Hotpoint suggests trying a 2-minute unplug for first. Hotpoint washers sold in North America are made by GE Appliances and use different codes, so check your model's handbook if you're in the US or Canada.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Switch the machine off and unplug it from the wall socket for a few minutes, then plug it back in and try again. Hotpoint advises this for the related F01 board fault; if F12 doesn't return, keep an eye on it.
  2. Plug the machine straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead, and make sure the socket works with another appliance.
  3. If the machine stopped with water inside, drain it through the pump filter at the bottom front (have towels and a shallow tray ready) before opening the door.
  4. Look for signs of a leak or damp around the control panel; if water has got into the electronics, let it dry fully and book an engineer rather than running it.
  5. If you're experienced with appliance repairs: with the machine unplugged, remove the top panel and check that the cable between the control panel board and the main board is firmly plugged in at both ends and undamaged. Indesit's service file has engineers check that connection and its continuity before replacing any board.
  6. If F12 comes back, book an engineer as Hotpoint advises. Boards usually need to match and be programmed for your exact model.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F12 returns after a power reset: Hotpoint recommends booking an engineer.
  • The cable and connectors look fine but the machine still won't operate: the next step is the power board, then the display board, which usually need to be matched to your model.
  • You see scorch marks, smell burning, or find water inside the control panel area.
  • The machine is under warranty: contact Hotpoint service rather than opening it up.
