Hotpoint Washer F9 E1 Error Code: Not Draining (Pump Filter, Hose or Drain Blocked)

Reviewed 2026-10-26 ยท Based on 2 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Newer Hotpoint machines such as the NM11 and H8 ActiveCare ranges use two-part codes (F1 E1, F4 and so on) instead of the classic F01 to F18 codes most other Hotpoint and Indesit machines show. The troubleshooting table in the Hotpoint NM11946BCAUK quick manual lists "The washing machine does not drain and the symbol (F9E1) on the display", and gives the possible causes and fixes as: clean the pump filter (see the Care and maintenance chapter), the drain hose is bent, and the drainage duct is clogged. If the problem persists after these checks, Hotpoint says to contact its Technical Assistance Service and give them the codes on the label inside the door. On older Hotpoint machines with the classic codes, the same kind of drain problem shows as F05 instead, and F11 is the separate drain pump circuit fault. The F9 E1 code also appears on Whirlpool-built machines sold in the US, where it means a long drain, but the fix is the same idea: something is stopping the water getting out.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Switch the machine off and unplug it. If it stopped during a hot wash, let the water cool before you open anything.
  2. Put a shallow tray and plenty of towels in front of the machine, open the small panel at the bottom front, and let the water out slowly through the emergency drain hose if your model has one, or by easing the pump filter open a little at a time.
  3. Unscrew the pump filter fully, clear any fluff, coins or hair grips, rinse it under the tap, and check the pump impeller behind it turns freely by hand. Screw the filter fully back in so it doesn't leak.
  4. Pull the machine out carefully and make sure the drain hose isn't bent, kinked or trapped against the wall or a cabinet.
  5. Check the drain the hose empties into: if it goes into a sink waste or trap, clear any blockage there; if it hangs in a standpipe, make sure the standpipe drains freely. Hotpoint's manual also says the hose should sit between 65 and 100 cm from the floor and its end shouldn't be submerged in water.
  6. Plug back in and run a Rinse and Spin or Spin & Drain programme. If F9 E1 shows again after all of this, contact Hotpoint's service team.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F9 E1 comes back after the pump filter, drain hose and drain have all been cleared: Hotpoint's manual says to contact its Technical Assistance Service at that point.
  • You can hear the pump humming but not running, or can't hear it at all during a drain, which points to a jammed or failed drain pump.
  • You can't safely drain the drum yourself, or water keeps leaking from the filter area after you've refitted it.
  • The machine is still under warranty: give the service team the codes from the label inside the door.
