MrCool Error Code PC 03: Pressure Protection, Usually Low Pressure (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
In MrCool's DIY multi-zone service manuals, the indoor unit shows PC 03 for a pressure protection trip, and the outdoor unit's display tells you which one: PC 30 is high pressure protection (the switch opens above 4.4 MPa) and PC 31 is low pressure protection (the outdoor pressure switch cuts off the system when low pressure drops below 0.13 MPa, about 18.85 psi). MrCool's support article for PC03 (titled PC03/P6) says the code indicates a low pressure protection issue that is generally related to restrictions in the system, so low pressure is the usual cause. The newer DIY 5th Gen multi-zone manual lists the outdoor codes as PC 30 (system high pressure protection) and PC 31 (system low pressure protection).
Likely causes
- Service valves that aren't fully open (MrCool says to open them all the way to the locking ring on a new install), or closed king valves on a multi-zone condenser.
- Line set connections that aren't fully tightened, letting refrigerant leak out.
- Low refrigerant charge or a restriction in the system (MrCool's support article).
- A stuck or failed low pressure switch, or a loose wire between the switch and the outdoor main board (MrCool's service manual checks the wiring and the switch first).
- Very low outdoor temperature, or an indoor fan that isn't running properly in cooling mode (both are checks in MrCool's low pressure flowchart).
- Less often, the high pressure side: if the outdoor unit shows PC 30, the cause is high pressure instead, such as a dirty condenser coil, poor airflow around the outdoor unit or an outdoor fan problem.
Safe DIY checks
MrCool warns that capacitors hold charge after the power is off and that boards should be handled with anti-static protection. Finding leaks, recovering and adding refrigerant need EPA-certified tools and training; don't try to recharge the system yourself.
- Turn the system off at the breaker. MrCool says to leave power off for 15 minutes before reaching inside, since parts stay energized.
- If this is a new install, check every line set connection at the air handlers, the condenser and any extension couplers. MrCool says they should be fully tightened with no threads showing.
- Make sure the service valves are opened all the way to the locking ring and lightly snugged. On a multi-zone unit (except Gen 4 dual zone), make sure the king valves on the two vertical lines above the normal service connections are open.
- Check that the indoor unit's filter is clean and the indoor fan runs, and clear leaves or debris from around the outdoor unit.
- If you can see the outdoor unit's display, note whether it shows PC 31 (low pressure) or PC 30 (high pressure) and tell your technician.
- If the code comes back on an existing install, or after the checks above, call a licensed HVAC technician. Low charge means a leak that has to be found and fixed, which is sealed-system work.
๐ When to call a pro
- Read the outdoor display: PC 31 is low pressure protection (below 0.13 MPa / 18.85 psi), PC 30 is high pressure protection (above 4.4 MPa).
- Check that the low pressure switch and the outdoor main board are wired correctly and reconnect if not.
- Unplug the switch and measure its resistance. MrCool's manual says a normal switch reads 0 ohms; replace it if it's open. MrCool's support article also suggests lightly tapping a stuck switch with the back of a screwdriver.
- Check for very low outdoor ambient temperature, confirm the gas (large) service valve core is fully open, and confirm the indoor fan runs properly in cooling mode (if not, follow MrCool's fan speed troubleshooting).
- Check system pressures and charge. If the charge is low, find and repair the leak, then evacuate and recharge to the nameplate charge. MrCool's flowchart asks whether the system works properly after refrigerant is added.
- If wiring, switch, valves, airflow and charge all check out, MrCool's flowchart ends at replacing the outdoor main board. On some models the outdoor electric control box is replaced as a whole.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Low pressure switch
Only if it reads open with the plug disconnected. Match the part to your outdoor model.
