Navien Error Code 012 (E012): Flame Loss (Meaning, Causes, What to Do)
What the code means
Navien's NPE-2 and NPN User's Information Manuals list E012 as "Flame loss." According to the NPE service manual, when the unit detects that the flame went out during combustion, it shuts off the gas, tries to restart and counts each flame loss; if it happens 20 times in a row, the display shows 012E, which has to be cleared manually. In plain terms, ignition worked but the flame didn't stay lit. That's different from E003 (ignition failure, where the burner never lit) and E004 (false flame detection). Navien's service manual ties E012 to the flame rod, the main gas valve and the burner, and its fault table splits it into flame loss with noise right after ignition, usually low gas supply pressure or a dirty flame rod, and flame loss at higher firing (2nd stage), usually a clogged gas orifice plate.
Likely causes
- Low gas supply pressure while the unit is firing. Navien specifies 3.5 to 10.5 inches WC for natural gas and 8.0 to 13 inches WC for propane, and its service manual notes that LP pressure drops happen often in winter.
- Pressure that looks fine at rest but drops when the furnace, stove or another gas appliance runs at the same time. Navien says to check dynamic pressure at maximum firing, not just static pressure.
- A gas meter too small for the water heater plus every other gas appliance in the house, which Navien's service manual tells technicians to check
- A gas line problem at the unit, such as an overtightened CSST fitting or pushed-out packing or thread tape partly blocking gas flow
- A dirty or oxidized flame rod. Navien says long exposure to high heat builds an oxide film that causes flame detection errors.
- Loose ground screws or bolts on the heat exchanger and combustion chamber, which can work loose from vibration and interrupt flame sensing
- A clogged intake air filter or a poorly grounded power cord, the two items on Navien's owner checklist
- A gas manifold or fuel DIP switch setting that doesn't match the gas type (natural gas versus propane), listed for E012 in the NPN manual
- Debris or sagging in the burner's metal fiber surface, or a clogged gas orifice plate, which causes flame loss at high fire
- Rarely, a faulty main gas valve or control board (PCB), which Navien lists only after the other checks
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Clean the intake air filter. On NPE-2 models, Navien's steps are: turn the unit off, disconnect power, remove the front cover and the screw holding the filter (top left), pull the filter out, clean it with a toothbrush under running water, let it dry completely, reinstall it and the cover, then restore power and turn the unit on. Navien suggests doing this every 3 to 4 months.
- Check that the water heater's power cord is plugged into a properly grounded outlet, not an ungrounded adapter.
- On propane, check the tank gauge. A low tank, especially in cold weather, can drop pressure enough to lose the flame.
- Notice whether E012 shows up when other gas appliances are running, like the furnace or a stove. Tell your technician, since it points to gas pressure or meter capacity.
- If the display shows 012E, clear it from the front panel (the Back button on NPE-2 models) and run hot water once. If it comes back, stop resetting it and call for service.
- The NPN manual also suggests turning the system off for at least 30 minutes and then restarting it.
- If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call your gas company from outside.
🛠 When to call a pro
- Measuring gas supply pressure with a manometer at maximum firing rate. Navien says this must be done by a licensed professional.
- Checking gas meter capacity and the gas piping and fittings to the unit
- Cleaning or replacing the flame rod and checking the flame detection value in diagnostic mode
- Tightening the heat exchanger ground screws, inspecting the burner's metal fiber, and removing and cleaning the gas orifice plate
- Confirming the gas manifold and DIP switch settings match the gas type, and testing the gas valve or replacing the PCB if everything else checks out
- If the unit is under warranty, call Navien Technical Support at 1-800-519-8794 first, with your model number, serial number and the error code.
Parts that commonly fix it

Combustible gas leak detector
Handy around a gas water heater. Any real gas smell means leave and call the gas company, not a DIY check.
