Pioneer Mini Split P4 Error Code: Outdoor Unit High Discharge Temperature (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 · Based on 4 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Pioneer's error code table for Diamante and Quantum wall-mounted systems (WYT series) lists P4 as "Outdoor unit high discharge temperature protection." A sensor on the compressor's discharge pipe watches how hot the refrigerant gas leaving the compressor gets. In Pioneer's Diamante Ultra (WYT-22) service manual, the compressor is slowed down once that temperature reaches 100 °C (212 °F) and the unit stops at 115 °C (239 °F). It can restart after the temperature drops below 100 °C and the compressor has been off for 3 minutes. If it trips six times in a row, it locks out and shows the code until you press the ON/OFF button; the count resets once the compressor runs for more than 6 minutes straight. Related codes on the same table: E8 and F2 are discharge temperature sensor faults rather than real overheating, and Fj means the unit is only slowing the compressor down because of high discharge temperature.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Turn off the breaker and outdoor disconnect before cleaning the filters or outdoor unit. The outdoor inverter board holds a high-voltage charge after power is off, so fan motor, board and sensor work is for a qualified technician. Refrigerant pressure checks, capillary replacement and recharging involve the sealed system and must be done by a certified technician (in the US, EPA Section 608 certification is required to handle refrigerant).

  1. Turn the system off at the breaker or disconnect, wait several minutes, and turn it back on. Six trips in a row lock the unit out until the ON/OFF button is pressed, so press it once to restart.
  2. Clean the indoor air filters (power off first) and refit them.
  3. Clear leaves, snow, covers, plants and stored items from around the outdoor unit so air can move freely in and out.
  4. With the power off, gently rinse dirt and lint off the outdoor coil fins with a garden hose (no pressure washer), and check through the fan guard for sticks or debris.
  5. Restart and confirm both the indoor and outdoor fans spin. If a fan isn't running, or P4 returns in mild weather, stop using the unit and call a licensed HVAC technician.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • Diamante flowchart only: checking whether the discharge temperature is over 230 °F (110 °C); at that branch Pioneer's chart says to replace the discharge pipe sensor and see whether P4 clears.
  • Confirming outdoor temperature at the unit (above 140 °F / 60 °C is normal protection) and adjusting the outdoor unit's installation if ventilation space is inadequate.
  • Cleaning the indoor filter or outdoor condenser, then checking the indoor and outdoor fan motors: clearing a blocked blade, or replacing the fan motor or PCB if the motor isn't working or is too slow.
  • Checking for a blocked capillary and replacing it if needed.
  • Checking system gas pressure against Pioneer's normal ranges (about 0.8 to 1.3 MPa in cooling and 2.0 to 3.6 MPa in heating) and charging refrigerant as needed after finding any leak.
  • Replacing the outdoor PCB if none of the above solves it.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Coil cleaner

For a dirty outdoor coil, one of the first things Pioneer's P4 chart checks; use a no-rinse or foaming coil cleaner made for AC coils.
