Senville Error Code PC 04: Inverter Compressor Drive Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Senville's Aura service manual error table lists PC 04 as "Inverter compressor drive error" (troubleshooting sheet TS12-S), next to PC 00 (outdoor IPM module protection), PC 01 (voltage protection) and PC 02 (compressor top or IPM temperature protection). Senville's support article explains that the system has detected an abnormality in the inverter compressor drive circuit, which could be related to communication signal loss, abnormal voltage readings or incorrect compressor rotation feedback. Senville groups PC 04 with PC 00 and the older codes P0 and P4 as a compressor driver, IPM or IGBT over-current protection problem, and says it often shares root causes with EC 07 (outdoor fan speed) and PC 00.
Likely causes
- Loose or miswired connections between the compressor and the outdoor control board.
- An outdoor fan that isn't running, a dirty or blocked outdoor coil, or poor ventilation around the outdoor unit (Senville says to check this and refer to EC 07 if the fan doesn't run).
- On a new install: a poor vacuum that left moisture or air in the lines, a kinked copper line, or refrigerant valves that weren't fully opened (Senville's commissioning checklist).
- Low refrigerant charge (Senville says to compare pressures against outdoor temperature).
- A faulty IPM board or outdoor control board.
- A compressor with uneven winding resistance or a winding shorted to ground.
Safe DIY checks
The outdoor inverter board holds a dangerous charge for a while after power is cut. Senville says these procedures must be performed by a certified HVAC contractor. Refrigerant work needs EPA-certified tools and training.
- Turn off power to the entire system, wait 2 minutes and turn it back on. Senville says that if the code clears, it may have been a temporary fault.
- Clear leaves, snow or debris from around the outdoor unit and make sure the outdoor fan isn't blocked.
- If this is a brand-new install, confirm the service valves were opened fully (counter-clockwise until they stop, without forcing them) and that the line set has no kinks.
- If the code returns, call a licensed HVAC technician. Senville says the remaining checks must be done by a certified HVAC contractor, since they involve live electrical parts and the sealed system.
๐ When to call a pro
- Inspect the wiring and connectors between the compressor and the outdoor control board, and between the outdoor fan motor and the board. Correct or replace any loose or miswired wires.
- Check the outdoor fan and coil. If the fan motor doesn't run, follow the EC 07 (fan speed) procedure and replace the motor if it's faulty.
- Check the refrigerant charge by comparing pressures with the outdoor ambient temperature. On a new install, confirm a proper vacuum and fully open valves.
- Measure the resistance of the compressor's three windings. They should all be uniform; if they aren't, replace the compressor. Also check each winding for continuity to ground, and replace the compressor if any winding is shorted to ground.
- If wiring, fan, charge and compressor all test good, replace the IPM board or the outdoor control board (Senville's final step).
