Trane Furnace Blinking 3 Times: Draft Pressure Switch Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 ยท Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Trane's integrated furnace control (IFC) flash code chart lists 3 flashes as "Draft Pressure Error" with three possible problems: a venting problem, a pressure switch problem, or an inducer problem. Before every heating cycle the draft inducer starts and pulls air through the heat exchanger and vent. The pressure switch is a small vacuum switch connected to the inducer by a rubber hose, and it should close once the inducer proves a safe draft, then open again when the inducer stops. Trane describes the fault on its ignition controls as the pressure switch failing to close when the inducer starts or failing to open when it stops (for example, already closed at the start of a call for heat). Either way the control keeps the gas valve off for safety. Typical symptoms are the inducer running for a short time, then shutting off with no igniter glow and no heat. The code is automatically reset once the switch behaves correctly. Newer Trane furnaces with a numeric display show pressure switch faults as E3.1 (shorted first-stage pressure switch) or E3.2 (open second-stage pressure switch) instead of flashes.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Turn off power at the furnace/HVAC service switch and the breaker before opening panels. Shut the gas valve before any work near the burners, and never disconnect or alter the gas line. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility.

  1. Count the red LED through the sight glass on the lower door before you touch anything: 3 flashes and a pause is this code. Trane's chart also lists slow flashing as normal with no call for heat and fast flashing as normal during a call for heat.
  2. Go outside and check the furnace's vent and air intake pipes (usually PVC on high-efficiency units) for snow, ice, leaves or nests. Clear anything blocking them.
  3. Turn off power to the furnace at its switch or breaker, remove the doors and find the pressure switch (a round switch with a rubber hose). Check that the hose is firmly attached at both ends with no cracks, sags full of water, or kinks.
  4. If your furnace is a high-efficiency model with a condensate trap and drain line, make sure water drains freely and the trap isn't clogged.
  5. Reattach the doors, restore power and call for heat. Listen: the inducer should start right away and run steadily, then the igniter should glow and the burners light. If the inducer runs a few seconds and the board goes back to 3 flashes, or the inducer hums but doesn't spin, call a pro.
  6. Note your model number (on the rating label inside the door, for example TUD..., TDD... or UX1...) before calling, since XR80 and XV95 are trade names covering many models.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • 3 flashes returns after you've cleared the vents, drain and hose.
  • The inducer motor hums, squeals, runs slowly or doesn't start.
  • Testing the pressure switch with a meter or manometer, checking inducer voltage at the board, or replacing the switch, inducer or control board. That's live-voltage work on a gas appliance.
  • Never jumper or bypass the pressure switch. It's what stops the furnace from firing when exhaust gases can't vent safely, and bypassing it can put carbon monoxide in your home. If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

โš™

Pressure switch (exact OEM part for your model)

Match the part number and pressure rating printed on your existing switch. Replace only after the vent, hose and inducer check out.

โš™

Pressure switch hose

Cheap and a common culprit when it cracks or hardens. Match the inside diameter and length.

Draft inducer motor assembly

Model-specific; usually a pro install.

Furnace air filter (your exact size)

Not a cause of this code, but worth replacing while the furnace is open.
