Amana Dryer T5 (tS) Error Code: Thermistor Short Sensed (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-25 · Based on 3 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

On the seven-segment display used by 27-inch Amana dryers such as the NED7200TW (electric) and NGD7200TW (gas), a lowercase t followed by S looks like t5, which is why people search for T5. The technical information sheet for these dryers (W10162408) lists tS as "Dryer Thermistor Short Sensed", triggered when the thermistor resistance is very low. The thermistor is the temperature sensor the control board uses to regulate heat, so it can't run a heated cycle safely when that reading is wrong. The same sheet ties tS to stored diagnostic code 1 (thermistor short). Its partner, diagnostic code 2 (Thermistor Open Sensed), means the resistance is very high instead, and the sheet blames that on a cold room below 50°F, an outside vent damper stuck open in winter, or loose wire terminals. Amana's current online error-code list covers newer models (AF, F# E#, L2, PF) and doesn't include tS, so this page applies to the older NED/NGD-style electronic dryers that show it.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Clean the lint screen, and check the slot under it for packed lint. A clogged screen is the first thing Amana's tech sheet says to check for tS.
  2. Check the exhaust vent from the dryer to the outside hood. Straighten or replace crushed or kinked duct, clean out lint, and make sure the outside damper opens when the dryer runs.
  3. Unplug the dryer (or turn off its breakers) before opening any panel. On a gas model, don't disturb the gas line or burner.
  4. Find the thermistor and its two-wire plug (blue and red wires on the NED7200TW wiring). Look for loose terminals, pinched or melted insulation, and corrosion, and fix anything you find.
  5. Disconnect the thermistor and measure it with a multimeter set to ohms. The tech sheet gives about 10K ohms at 77°F (25°C). A reading near zero confirms a shorted thermistor; replace it.
  6. If you want to view or clear stored codes, the tech sheet's Service Mode works with the dryer on: press Chime and Temperature for 3 seconds (3 beeps), press Wrinkle Prevent to show the code list ("d"), turn the cycle knob to step through codes, and press Sensor Dry Level and Time together for 3 seconds to clear the list. Press Off to exit.
  7. Run a heated cycle. If tS comes back with a clean vent, a good thermistor reading and undamaged wiring, the control board is the likely cause.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • You aren't comfortable opening a 240-volt electric dryer or working near a gas dryer's burner.
  • The thermistor and wiring test good and tS keeps coming back, pointing to the control board.
  • You find scorched wires, melted connectors or heat damage inside the cabinet.
  • The vent run is hidden in a wall or roof and can't be cleaned from the ends.
  • The dryer runs very hot or smells of burning after a repair.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.
