Bosch Dryer E01 Error Code: Blocked Lint Filter or Heat Exchanger (How to Fix It)
What the code means
Bosch uses E01 (and E02 on some US models) to warn that air can't move freely through the dryer's lint filter. Bosch's US error code guide says E01 or E02 means the lint filter is blocked and needs to be cleaned, and that ignoring it can reduce drying performance and potentially damage the dryer. Bosch UK says its tumble dryers show E01 when they detect a blockage in the filter or the heat exchanger, and that the blockage makes the appliance overheat. Bosch Germany notes the filter can be clogged by fabric softener residue as well as lint, which is hard to see, so a filter that looks empty can still be blocked. The fix is cleaning, not a part: Bosch says to clean the lint filter after every drying cycle and rinse it occasionally with warm water. Condenser and heat pump models also have a heat exchanger (Bosch UK describes one behind a maintenance flap at the bottom front), and lint built up there blocks airflow the same way. Bosch says to contact customer support if the error persists after cleaning.
Likely causes
- Lint built up on the lint (fluff) filter, which Bosch names for E01 and E02
- Fabric softener residue coating the filter mesh, which Bosch Germany says is hard to see
- Lint around the filter housing, which Bosch UK says to wipe out
- On condenser and heat pump dryers, a heat exchanger clogged with lint (Bosch UK)
- If the error stays after all filters are clean, a fault Bosch service needs to diagnose
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Let the dryer cool, open the door and pull out the lint filter (on Bosch UK models it's a two-part fluff filter in the door area).
- Open the filter, remove the lint with a cloth or your hand, and wipe lint out of the filter housing.
- Rinse the filter under running water (Bosch Germany suggests a soft brush) to remove fabric softener film, dry it well and put it back.
- If your dryer has a maintenance flap at the bottom front, put an absorbent cloth down (residual water can leak), open the flap, unlock the levers, remove the heat exchanger and rinse it from all sides with water only. Don't use hard or sharp objects. Clean the seals, refit it and close the flap until it clicks.
- Start a new cycle. Going forward, Bosch says to clean the lint filter after every drying cycle.
๐ When to call a pro
- E01 comes back right after you've cleaned the lint filter and (if fitted) the heat exchanger: contact Bosch customer support (1-800-944-2904 in the US) with your model (E-Nr) and FD number ready.
- The filter is torn or won't seat properly: replace it with the part that matches your model number.
- You notice a burning smell or the dryer gets unusually hot: stop using it and have it serviced.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Replacement lint filter
Only if yours is torn or warped. Match the part number to your dryer's model number.
