Amana Washer nd Error Code: No Drain, Water Won't Pump Out (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Amana's technical information sheet for the 27-inch front-load washer NFW7200TW (DC68-02028G) lists nd as diagnostic code 1, No Drain: the water level fails to drop below the Low Water level reset within 15 minutes, before a spin begins. The sheet tells the technician to go to its Will Not Drain troubleshooting section, and its Will Not Start section notes that if there is an electrical problem in the drain system, the nd error appears after 15 minutes. So the washer tried to pump out for a full 15 minutes and the water level sensor never saw the tub empty. This letter code belongs to that older front-load control; newer Whirlpool-built Amana washers report a slow or failed drain as F9 E1 instead. The same sheet also lists Sd (suds period) separately, and heavy suds can slow draining too.
Likely causes
- A restricted drain system: a kinked or crushed drain hose, or a clogged hose or standpipe (Amana's first check)
- A frozen drain hose in a cold garage or basement, which the tech sheet calls out for cold climates
- A clogged drain pump filter on models that have one (Amana's Not Draining article lists it first)
- A twisted hose between the tub and the drain pump inside the washer
- A drain pump that has failed or is jammed (the tech sheet gives a pump winding resistance of 14.2 ohms, plus or minus 7%)
- No power reaching the pump: a loose connection at the control board connector CN10 (pin 6) or a faulty control board
- The control not sensing the water level correctly, so it thinks water is still in the tub
- Too many suds from non-HE detergent or too much detergent, which slows the pump-out
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Turn the washer off and unplug it before you touch the hoses or pump area. Keep towels and a shallow pan ready, because the drum is still full of water.
- Pull the washer out and straighten the drain hose. Look for kinks, crushed spots, and anything pinning it against the wall.
- Take the hose end out of the standpipe or laundry tub and check that the house drain isn't backed up. If water rises in the standpipe when the washer drains, the clog is in the house plumbing.
- In a cold garage or basement, check whether the drain hose has frozen. Let it thaw fully before running the washer again.
- If your model has a drain pump filter behind a small access door at the front bottom, drain the water into the pan and clean out lint, coins, and other debris, then refit it tightly. Not every model has one, so check your use and care guide.
- Make sure the drain hose end sits in the standpipe correctly: secure, not taped in, and no more than 4.5 in (113 mm) down the pipe, as Amana advises.
- If the drum was full of foam, use HE detergent at the dose on its label. The tech sheet suggests running a cycle with the coldest water, a tablespoon of salt, and no detergent to clear heavy suds.
- Plug it back in and run Rinse and Spin or Drain and Spin with no clothes. If water pumps out and nd doesn't return, the blockage was the cause.
๐ When to call a pro
- The hoses, house drain and pump filter are all clear and nd still comes back.
- You can't hear the pump run at all when the washer should be draining. A technician checks for 120 VAC at the pump during a spin, the pump winding resistance, and the control board connection at CN10 pin 6 using the tech sheet's Board Output Test.
- The pump hums but no water moves, which points to a jammed or failed pump or a blocked or twisted tub-to-pump hose inside the cabinet.
- The washer won't unlock because of the water inside. Amana's tech sheet describes draining it manually by removing the drain hose clamp, which is a job best left to a technician because of the volume of water.
- The washer is under warranty. Use Amana's contact or schedule-service page rather than opening the cabinet.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Washer drain pump
Only after the hoses, house drain and pump filter are ruled out. Match it to your Amana model number.
Search eBay โDigital multimeter
For checking the pump winding resistance (about 14.2 ohms per Amana's tech sheet) with the washer unplugged.
