Amana Washer F8 E1 Error Code (LF, Lo FL): Not Filling Fast Enough (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-25 ยท Based on 3 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Amana's own Product Help says the F8 E1 or Lo FL code means the washer is not detecting the correct amount of incoming water. On its top-load HE washer code list, Amana groups LF, Lo FL and F8 E1 together as "The washer is taking too long to fill," and on its front-load list it describes F8 E1 or Lo FL as the washer sensing a low flow of water. Amana also notes that both hot and cold water must be supplied to the washer, so one closed faucet or one unhooked hose is enough to trigger it. When the code appears, the door may stay locked and the controls may stop responding. Pressing Power starts a drain routine that takes about 8 to 10 minutes with the pump running the whole time, and Amana says to wait 10 minutes before trying anything else. The code isn't always about the water coming in: if the drain hose is pushed too far into the standpipe, taped in, or the standpipe is shorter than 39 inches, water can flow back out as fast as it comes in, so the washer never reaches its fill level. Amana washers are made by Whirlpool, so the same F8 E1, LF and Lo FL codes also appear on Whirlpool, Maytag and Whirlpool-built Kenmore washers.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Press Power to clear the code. The washer runs a drain routine for about 8 to 10 minutes and won't accept input during that time, so wait 10 minutes before doing anything else.
  2. Make sure both the hot and cold faucets behind the washer are turned fully on and that both hoses are connected.
  3. Check that the red hose goes to the hot (red) inlet and the blue hose to the cold (blue) inlet, and that neither hose is kinked.
  4. Turn the water off, take the hoses off with pliers (have a bucket ready), and run water through each hose at a sink. If the flow is weak or blocked, replace the hose.
  5. Look at the inlet screens on the back of the washer's water valve. If they're clogged, clean them in place with an old toothbrush, mild soap and water without removing the screens.
  6. If there's an anti-flood or flood-safe device on the line, connect the washer directly to the supply instead, as Amana recommends.
  7. Check the drain hose: no more than 4.5 in (113 mm) inside the drainpipe, held with the U-shaped hose form, not taped in, with an air gap around it, and a standpipe at least 39 in (99 cm) tall measured from the floor.
  8. On a front loader, Amana's code list also says pressing Pause or Cancel twice and then Power once clears the code. Run a short cycle and watch whether water flows in.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F8 E1 comes back with both faucets fully open, clean screens, hoses that flow freely and a correct drain setup.
  • No water enters at all, or only hot or only cold fills. The water inlet valve may need testing and replacing.
  • Water clearly fills the tub but the code still appears. A technician should check the water level sensing and the control.
  • The washer is under warranty. Amana's service line is 1-866-616-2664, and opening the cabinet yourself can complicate a warranty claim.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

Washer inlet hoses

Replace hoses that are kinked or that flow weakly because of mineral build-up.

Drain hose form

The U-shaped form that keeps no more than 4.5 in of drain hose in the standpipe so the washer doesn't siphon.
