Carrier Error Code 82: High Stage Thermal Lockout or Suction Over Temp Lockout (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Carrier's Residential Fault Code List (Technical Information TIC2025-0010) lists two outdoor-unit meanings for 82, depending on the equipment. On two-stage communicating units (for example the 25HNB6 heat pump and 24ANB6/24ANB7 air conditioners, and older 38TDB, 24ANA and 25HNA models), 82 is a high stage thermal lockout. Carrier's 25HNB6 installation instructions explain how it works: the control watches for compressor voltage on the run capacitor, and if voltage disappears for 10 seconds while there's still a call for cooling or heating, it treats the compressor's thermal protector as open (code 72, High Stage Thermal Cutout). It stops the compressor for 15 minutes, keeps the outdoor fan running, then tries again. If the thermal cutout trips on three consecutive cycles, high stage is locked out for 4 hours or until 24-volt control power is recycled, and code 82 is shown. Carrier's Infinity/Evolution troubleshooting guide adds that on older two-stage platforms a mix of three high and low stage cutouts can set it. Carrier names the likely causes of the underlying cutout as an internal compressor overload trip, or a start relay and capacitor held in the circuit too long. On variable-speed units, Carrier's 25VNA8/24VNA9 service manual defines 82 as Suction Over Temp Lockout, elevated from code 72 (Suction Over Temperature Event) after three occurrences, with a 4-hour reset time. Code 81 is the matching low stage lockout and 83 and 84 are the low and high pressure lockouts.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Turn off power at the furnace/HVAC service switch and the breaker before opening panels.

  1. Note the exact wording on the thermostat (wall control): "Thermal Lockout in High Stage 4 Hours" or "Suction Over Temp Lockout." It tells you and your technician which kind of 82 you have.
  2. Let the system sit. The lockout clears on its own after 4 hours. On two-stage units Carrier says it also clears when the 24-volt control power is recycled, so turning the indoor unit's power off for a minute and back on resets it.
  3. Replace or check the indoor air filter and make sure supply and return vents aren't blocked. Low indoor airflow is one of Carrier's listed causes for the variable-speed version.
  4. With the power off at the outdoor disconnect, clear leaves, grass and debris from around the outdoor unit and gently rinse the outdoor coil with a garden hose from the inside out if you can reach it, or use a coil cleaner made for condensers.
  5. When it runs again, watch the outdoor unit. If the fan isn't spinning while the compressor runs, or the unit runs for a while and then the compressor stops while the fan keeps going, write that down for the technician.
  6. In cooling, look at the indoor coil area or refrigerant lines for ice. If you see ice, turn cooling off and run the fan only until it melts before calling for service.
  7. Don't keep resetting it over and over. Each lockout means the compressor protected itself, and repeated restarts on an overheating compressor can shorten its life.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • 82 comes back after the filter, vents and outdoor coil are clean. Charge, valves and refrigerant flow need gauges and temperature readings.
  • A technician should check refrigerant charge (Carrier calls for subcooling in cooling and the heating check charge chart or weigh-in in heating), the TXV or EXV, the reversing valve and the service valves.
  • On a two-stage unit, the compressor overload, run capacitor, and any start relay and start capacitor need testing.
  • The outdoor fan isn't running, or the indoor coil keeps icing up.
  • Refrigerant work requires an EPA-certified technician. If the system is under warranty, call your Carrier dealer rather than opening the unit.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Condenser coil cleaner

For cleaning a dirty outdoor coil with the power off. A clean coil helps the compressor run cooler.

⚙

HVAC air filter

Match the size printed on your current filter. A clogged filter cuts indoor airflow.
