Lennox Error Code 292 (E292): Indoor Blower Motor Start Fault (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
In Lennox's Residential Communicating Systems Alert Code Guide, alert 292 is ID Blower Motor Start Fault: the indoor unit blower motor will not start, and the system goes into Watchguard mode. Lennox says this could be due to a seized bearing, a stuck wheel or obstructions, and that the motor, motor module or wheel should be replaced if the assembly does not operate or meet performance standards. It's rated Service Urgent and clears automatically after the indoor blower motor starts successfully. Lennox furnace unit information for the SL280UHVK and SL280DFNV shows the same fault as E292, indoor blower motor unable to start due to an obstructed wheel or seized bearings, with a 1-hour soft lockout that clears after the circulator successfully starts. While the blower can't run, the furnace can't move heated air and the air conditioner can't move cooled air, so the system effectively stops working. A related code is E295, indoor blower motor temperature too high, where the motor tripped its internal protector.
Likely causes
- A seized blower motor bearing, so the motor can't turn the shaft (Lennox names this first)
- A stuck blower wheel, for example one rubbing the housing or with a loose hub that has shifted on the shaft
- Something obstructing the blower wheel, such as debris, insulation, a loose part or a heavy buildup of dirt on the wheel blades
- A failed variable-speed motor or motor module (control end) that can't start the motor even though the wheel turns freely
Safe DIY checks
Turn off power at the furnace/HVAC service switch and the breaker before opening panels.
- Read the alert on your Lennox thermostat or the furnace's display so you know it's 292 (blower start fault) and not 295 (blower motor overheated).
- Turn off power to the furnace or air handler at the service switch or breaker and wait a few minutes before opening the blower compartment door.
- Look into the blower housing with a flashlight for anything caught in the wheel, such as debris, a loose wire, insulation or a filter that got pulled in.
- With power still off, turn the blower wheel by hand. It should spin freely and coast a little. If it's stiff, grinds, won't move or rubs the housing, the bearing or wheel is the problem.
- Check the air filter and replace it if it's clogged, since a dirty filter lets dust build up on the wheel.
- Close the blower door fully (the door switch must be pressed), restore power and give the system a call for heat or cooling. The alert clears on its own once the blower starts; on a furnace you may have to wait out the one-hour soft lockout.
- If the wheel spins freely but code 292 keeps returning, the motor or its control module has likely failed, which is a job for a technician.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The blower wheel is seized, grinds or rubs the housing when you turn it by hand.
- Code 292 keeps coming back even though the wheel spins freely, which points to the motor or motor module.
- Removing the blower assembly or testing the variable-speed motor would require working on live electrical parts.
- The furnace is in lockout during cold weather and you need heat restored quickly.
- You also see code 295 (blower motor overheated), which suggests the motor is failing.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Furnace blower motor
Lennox says to replace the motor, motor module or wheel if the assembly doesn't operate. Match the part to your unit's model and serial number.
Search eBay →HVAC air filter
A clean filter keeps dust from building up on the blower wheel. Match the size printed on your current filter.
