Carrier Furnace Code 34: Ignition-Proving Fault (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 ยท Based on 2 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Carrier status codes are two digits: the first digit is the number of short flashes and the second the number of long flashes, so code 34 is 3 short flashes followed by 4 long flashes. Carrier's troubleshooting guides for its variable-speed (58-06T) and 2-stage (58-3T) furnaces define code 34 as IGNITION-PROVING FAULT: flame was not sensed during the trial-for-ignition period. The control repeats the ignition sequence 3 more times before going to status code 14, IGNITION LOCKOUT. The code can also mean the flame signal was lost during steady-state operation; in that case the 2-stage guide says the blower comes on for a 90-second recycle delay, and the variable-speed guide says that if the flame is lost during the blower on-delay, the blower runs for the selected blower off-delay. Carrier's checklist covers low inlet gas pressure, the gas valve being defective or turned off, a closed manual gas valve, a defective hot surface igniter, oxide build-up on the flame sensor, flame current (0.5 microamps DC minimum, 4.0 to 6.0 microamps nominal), control ground continuity, and on the 2-stage models a flame sensor that is grounded, the green ground wire not connected to the furnace sheet metal, and inadequate flame carryover or rough ignition. Carrier's 2-stage guide says the control auto-resets 3 hours after a code 14 lockout.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Turn off power at the furnace/HVAC service switch and the breaker before opening panels. Shut the gas valve before any work near the burners, and never disconnect or alter the gas line. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility.

  1. Confirm the code: look through the sight glass on the blower door and count 3 short flashes followed by 4 long flashes. Write it down before turning power off.
  2. Make sure the gas is on: check the manual gas shut-off valve on the pipe to the furnace (handle in line with the pipe) and the on/off switch on the gas valve. If other gas appliances aren't working either, call your gas utility.
  3. Watch one heating cycle. The control retries 3 more times on its own. If it keeps failing, it moves to code 14 (lockout), which Carrier's 2-stage control auto-resets after 3 hours.
  4. Check that the furnace filter is clean and that the blower door is seated firmly, without touching anything inside the control compartment.
  5. If you're comfortable doing it with the power and gas off, Carrier's fix for oxide build-up is cleaning the flame sensor rod with fine sandpaper or fine steel wool and making sure it's back in its original position. If you're not sure which part is the sensor, leave it for a pro.
  6. If you smell gas at any point, don't try to relight or reset anything: leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • The code comes back after the flame sensor has been cleaned, or the furnace goes into code 14 lockout.
  • Running Carrier's component test to see whether the hot surface igniter glows orange/white hot by the end of the 15-second warm-up, then checking for 115 VAC at the igniter connector and continuity through the harness and igniter.
  • Checking for 24 VAC at the gas valve on a call for heat, continuity of the gas valve wires back to the control, and whether the valve opens and lets gas flow.
  • Measuring flame current with a DC microammeter in series with the flame sensor wire, and checking ground continuity and the green ground wire.
  • Checking inlet and manifold gas pressure, firing rate, flame carryover and air leakage around the igniter bracket.
  • Burners pulsate, light roughly or drop out after a few seconds. Carrier's guide checks vent sizing, gas valve regulation and the heat exchanger.
  • Never jumper or bypass a safety device, and leave gas valve and gas pressure work to a qualified technician.
