Carrier Furnace Code 41: Blower Motor Fault (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 ยท Based on 3 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Carrier status codes are two digits: the first digit is the number of short flashes and the second the number of long flashes, so code 41 is 4 short flashes followed by 1 long flash. Carrier's troubleshooting guides for its variable-speed furnaces (58MVP, 58MVB and 58UVB, guide 58-06T) and its 59MN7A modulating furnace define status code 41 as BLOWER MOTOR FAULT: the blower failed to reach 250 RPM, or failed to communicate with the furnace control, within 30 seconds after being turned on or within 10 seconds during steady-state operation. These furnaces use a variable-speed (ECM) blower motor that talks to the control board over a data connection, which is why a communication problem can trigger the same code as a motor that won't spin. If the fault happens in two heating cycles in a row, Carrier's guide says the control switches to status code 15, BLOWER MOTOR LOCKOUT, and resets itself after 3 hours. Code 41 can also appear at the end of Carrier's built-in component test, meaning the blower motor failed that test. Code 41 is not listed in Carrier's 2-stage (58-3T) guide, so check that your furnace is a variable-speed or modulating model before following this page.

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Turn off power at the furnace/HVAC service switch and the breaker before opening panels. Shut the gas valve before any work near the burners, and never disconnect or alter the gas line. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility.

  1. Confirm the code: look through the sight glass on the blower door and count 4 short flashes followed by 1 long flash. Write it down before turning power off, because a power reset clears the current flash.
  2. If the furnace keeps failing on code 41, it may switch to code 15 (blower motor lockout). Carrier's guide says that lockout resets itself after 3 hours.
  3. Replace or clean a clogged furnace filter so the blower isn't fighting a restriction. It won't fix a failed motor, but it rules out an easy problem.
  4. With the power turned off at the furnace switch or breaker, look for signs of water on or around the blower motor, such as a leaking A-coil drain pan or humidifier. Carrier's guide says to find and fix any water source, since it can ruin a replacement motor too.
  5. If you're comfortable removing the blower door with the power off, spin the blower wheel by hand. It should turn freely without rubbing or wobbling. If it scrapes, binds or slips on the shaft, that's a repair for a technician.
  6. Don't open the blower motor or its control module. Carrier warns to wait at least 5 minutes after disconnecting power before opening the motor to avoid electric shock.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • Code 41 comes back after a power reset, or the furnace goes into code 15 lockout. The blower is what moves heated air through the house, so the furnace won't heat normally until it's fixed.
  • Carrier's checkout starts by jumpering R and W/W1 with the door switch held closed and watching whether the blower comes up to speed before the code flashes, then checks the blower wheel for rubbing, binding and a loose hub.
  • A technician then checks the connectors and wiring between the furnace control and the blower motor, the 115-volt power at the control and at the motor, and the blower's low-voltage supply and data signals, to tell a bad harness from a bad control board or motor.
  • Before replacing only the blower control module, Carrier's guide has the technician check the motor windings and the motor's insulation to ground with the module removed. If the motor fails, the whole motor and module are replaced together.
  • Never jumper or bypass a safety device, and leave the line-voltage tests to a qualified technician.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

โš™

Variable-speed (ECM) blower motor or blower control module (exact OEM part for your model)

Only after a technician confirms the motor or module failed. These are programmed for specific furnace models, so match your model number.
