Fujitsu Mini Split Error Code 11: Serial Communication Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Fujitsu's service manuals list E:11 as "Serial communication error" and split it into two cases. In a serial reverse transfer error (outdoor unit), the indoor unit can't receive the serial signal from the outdoor unit for more than 2 minutes after power on, or for more than 15 seconds during normal operation; Fujitsu's listed causes are a connection failure, an external cause, a main PCB failure or an outdoor unit fan motor failure. In a serial forward transfer error (indoor unit), the outdoor unit can't properly receive the serial signal from the indoor unit for 10 seconds or more; causes are a connection failure, an external cause or a main PCB failure. On units without a wired remote, the indoor unit shows it as 1 Operation light flash and 1 Timer light flash, with the Economy light flashing continuously. Fujitsu's 410A mini-split troubleshooting guide describes it as the evaporator (indoor) and condenser (outdoor) not communicating at start-up, and says wire nuts and splices in the interconnect are not recommended.
Likely causes
- A loose, disconnected or miswired interconnect wire between the indoor and outdoor units, or a loose connector or open cable inside the control box.
- Wire nuts or splices in the indoor-to-outdoor cable, which Fujitsu's troubleshooting guide says are not recommended.
- Supply voltage at the outdoor unit outside Fujitsu's range (AC 103.5 to 126.5 V on 115 V models; AC 198 to 264 V on 220-240 V models).
- External electrical noise, such as a poor ground or equipment near the power cable that puts out harmonic interference (Fujitsu names neon lights and some electronics).
- A failed outdoor unit main PCB or outdoor fan motor (reverse transfer error), or a failed indoor unit main PCB (forward transfer error).
Safe DIY checks
The E:11 checks are live voltage measurements at the indoor-to-outdoor terminals. Leave terminal testing, rewiring and board or fan motor replacement to a licensed HVAC technician, and switch off power at the breaker and outdoor disconnect before touching any wiring.
- Note the light pattern: 1 Operation flash, 1 Timer flash and a continuously flashing Economy light means E:11.
- Turn the system off at the breaker or disconnect for a few minutes, then back on, and run it. Fujitsu's first step is a power reset. If the code doesn't come back, the likely cause is electrical noise or a poor ground.
- Check whether anything changed recently near the outdoor unit or the line set, such as new wiring, a damaged cable, landscaping work or chewed wires, and whether any new equipment like neon lighting was added near the power cable.
- Make sure the breaker for the system isn't tripping or loose and that the outdoor disconnect is fully on.
- If the code returns after a reset, call the installer or a licensed HVAC technician. The remaining checks are live voltage tests at the outdoor terminals.
๐ When to call a pro
- Interconnect wiring has loose, open, spliced or crossed conductors. Fujitsu says to correct it per the installation manual.
- Outdoor L-N supply voltage is out of range. Fujitsu's next check is the power supply before any board is condemned.
- Reverse transfer signal at outdoor terminals 1-3 doesn't swing as specified (AC 90 to 270 V in the cited manuals). Fujitsu says to check the outdoor fan motor; if it's bad, replace the fan motor and outdoor main PCB, and if it's good, replace the outdoor main PCB.
- Forward transfer signal at outdoor terminals 2-3 doesn't swing between AC 30 and 130 V. Fujitsu says to replace the indoor unit main PCB.
- The system is new or under warranty. Contact the installer or Fujitsu General America technical support (866-952-8324) first.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Outdoor or indoor unit main control board
Fujitsu replaces the outdoor main PCB for a reverse transfer error or the indoor main PCB for a forward transfer error, only after the wiring, voltage and signal checks; match the exact model number.
