What the code means

Fujitsu lists E:53 as "Drain pump error (Indoor unit)" in the troubleshooting chapter of its service manuals for ducted, cassette and floor/ceiling units (for example the ABYG36KRTA, AUXG36KRLB, ABEG54KRTA and ARXH30KMTAP). The indoor main board detects it when the float switch is ON for more than 3 minutes, meaning condensate water in the drain pan is not being pumped away. On units without a wired remote, the same fault shows as blinking lights; on the ARXH30KMTAP the Operation light flashes 5 times, the Timer light 3 times and the Economy light flashes continuously. Fujitsu's support page lists other blink patterns for older series (for example 5 Operation and 3 Timer flashes on RLF and RGLX series, and code 09 on some older wired remotes), so check your own manual. Wall-mounted units have no float switch; Fujitsu says a wall mount showing this error needs its indoor control board replaced.

Switch off the breaker for the indoor unit before inspecting the drain or the unit. Float switch, connector and board checks involve live circuits inside the indoor unit, so leave them to a licensed HVAC technician; Fujitsu notes some tests require an electrical or refrigerant license.

  1. Note the exact code or blink pattern and your indoor unit model number, since the blink counts differ by series.
  2. Turn the system off at the remote, then switch off the breaker for the indoor unit before touching anything near the drain.
  3. Find where the condensate line ends (outside, at a floor drain or at a condensate pump) and check that it isn't kinked, crushed, frozen or blocked by dirt or insects.
  4. If the outlet end is reachable, a wet/dry vacuum held on the end of the line can pull out a clog. Fujitsu's own procedure for technicians is blowing nitrogen through the hose, so don't force air or wire into the line from the unit side.
  5. If you see water dripping from the indoor unit, put towels down and leave the unit off so it doesn't overflow onto ceilings or walls.
  6. Restore power and run cooling. If 53 comes back within a few minutes, the float switch, pump or board needs a technician.

  • The drain line is clear and 53 returns. A technician removes the float switch and tests its ON/OFF switching with a meter, then replaces it if it fails.
  • The float switch tests fine. Fujitsu's next step is checking the CN9 connector for loose contact and the wire for pinching or shorts.
  • The drain pump doesn't run. Per Fujitsu's manuals the technician checks the pump voltage at CN71 on the main board: 12 V there means the pump is bad, anything else means the main board is bad.
  • Your unit is a wall mount. It has no float switch, so Fujitsu says to replace the indoor control board (and set the original address).
  • Water is leaking into a ceiling or wall. Leave the unit off and call a technician, since cassette and ducted units sit above finished spaces.
  • The system is new or under warranty. Contact the installer or Fujitsu General America technical support (866-952-8324) first.
