GE Dryer Error Code 11: Blocked Vent Detected (UltraFresh GFD/GFV Dryers)
What the code means
Error codes aren't the same across every GE dryer, so check your model number first (it's on the label inside the door opening). GE's Technical Service Guide for the UltraFresh dryer (publication 31-9349, covering GFD55, GFD65, GFD85 and GFV55 models) lists fault code 11 as Blocked Vent, with the trigger 'the blocked vent algorithm has detected a blockage' and the action 'check the vent and clear, if blocked.' The same guide says the Check Vent light means an issue has been found due to reduced airflow from a possible blocked or restricted vent, and that checking or cleaning the vent system is recommended. In other words, code 11 isn't a broken part: it's the dryer telling you the air it pushes out isn't getting away fast enough. GE's support pages explain why that matters: if the dryer can't get rid of hot, moist air, the heat and humidity stay in the drum, the cabinet can feel hot or sweat, drying takes longer, and lint can build up in the vent, which is a fire risk. GE's front-load vent sensing article says the alert goes off on its own once the dryer starts and senses the blockage has been removed, and that it only alerts after it has sensed a blockage 4 times, to avoid false trips. You can read stored codes in Consumer Fault Code Mode: from idle with all lights off, hold Start for 10 seconds until all lights come on, then press Start to step through them; '--' blinks at the end of the list. On some other GE electronic dryers, such as the Profile DPVH880, a similar blocked airflow fault shows as E11 instead; see our GE dryer E11 page, and our 13 page for the UltraFresh door switch code.
Likely causes
- Lint packed in the exhaust duct between the dryer and the outside wall (GE's listed action is to check and clear the vent)
- A kinked, crushed or collapsed transition duct behind the dryer, often from pushing the dryer too close to the wall
- An outside wall cap whose flaps are stuck, or a bird or animal nest, snow or ice blocking the hood (GE support pages)
- A duct run that's longer or has more elbows than the installation instructions allow, or plastic or foil duct that sags and collects lint (GE says to use rigid or flexible metal 4-inch duct only)
- A full lint filter or a lint-clogged filter chute adding to the restriction
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Unplug the dryer (and shut off the gas on a gas model) before pulling it out or disconnecting the duct.
- Clean the lint filter, and vacuum out the filter slot as far as you can reach.
- Pull the dryer out and look at the transition duct behind it. Straighten any kinks or crushed sections; replace plastic or foil duct with 4-inch rigid metal or UL-listed flexible metal duct, as GE requires.
- Disconnect the duct from the dryer and vacuum or brush it out with a long appliance brush (GE sells a brush set, PM14X10056). Long or hidden runs are a good job for a local duct-cleaning service.
- Go outside and check the wall cap while the dryer runs: the flaps should open freely and you should feel strong airflow. Clear any nest, lint, snow or ice. Don't put a screen over the exhaust.
- Check the installation instructions for the maximum duct length and number of elbows for your model, and shorten the run if you're over.
- Reconnect everything and run a normal automatic cycle. GE says the vent alert turns off once the dryer starts and senses the blockage is gone. A technician can clear the stored code log with Service Mode test 13.
๐ When to call a pro
- The vent is clean and airflow at the wall cap is strong, but code 11 or Check Vent keeps coming back: have a technician check the blower and the dryer's sensors.
- The duct runs through a wall, attic or crawl space you can't reach, or it's longer than the installation instructions allow: a duct-cleaning or venting pro can clear or reroute it.
- You smell burning, see scorched lint, or the cabinet is too hot to touch: unplug the dryer and leave it off until it's inspected.
- Any time you smell gas, leave the dryer off, shut off the gas and call for service. Never run a gas dryer with the vent disconnected, because of the carbon monoxide risk GE warns about.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Dryer vent cleaning brush kit
For clearing lint from the duct; GE's own set is PM14X10056.
Search eBay โ4-inch rigid metal dryer duct
GE says to use rigid metal, or UL-listed flexible metal for the transition, and never plastic.
