GE Dryer E11: Drum Motor Not Turning or Blocked Airflow, Depending on Model (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 ยท Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

GE uses E11 for different faults depending on the dryer family, so check your model number (on the label inside the door opening) first. In the Technical Service Guide for GE dryers with Mist (models GFDN240, GFDN245, GFDS350 and related GFDN/GFDS units, publication 31-9209), the error code table lists E11 as Drum Motor: the motor is not rotating properly or the centrifugal switch is bad. The centrifugal switch is built into the motor; on GE dryers it tells the control the motor has come up to speed and closes the heat circuit, so a motor that won't spin up or a switch that doesn't close triggers E11. In the Technical Service Guide for the GE Profile DPVH880EJ/GJ dryer (publication 31-9167), E11 is Blocked Airflow, with the instruction to check the ventilation system; that model uses E10 for the blower motor and E12 for the drum motor. On these electronic GE dryers the control keeps a log of recent errors that a technician can read and clear in service mode; the GFDN/GFDS guide says it stores the last 8 codes and shows E00 when the log is empty. Other GE models, such as some compact dryers, may use E11 for something else, so if your model isn't one of these, look up the tech sheet tucked behind the control panel or in the owner's packet.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Unplug the dryer (and shut off the gas supply on a gas model) before reaching inside or moving it.
  2. Find your model number on the label inside the door opening so you know which E11 meaning applies.
  3. Clean the lint screen, and wash it with warm soapy water if dryer sheets have left a film on it.
  4. Pull the dryer out and check the exhaust duct: straighten kinks, replace crushed foil or vinyl duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, and clear lint from the full run and the outside hood. The hood flap should open freely when the dryer runs.
  5. With the dryer unplugged and empty, turn the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly. If it spins with no resistance at all, the drive belt is likely broken; if it's stiff, scrapes, or won't move, a roller, idler pulley, or something caught in the drum may be the problem.
  6. Don't overload the drum. A packed drum makes the motor work harder to reach speed.
  7. Plug back in and run a timed dry cycle with a small load. If the drum turns, the dryer heats, and E11 doesn't return, the problem was likely the vent or a temporary overload.
  8. On a GFDN/GFDS dryer, if E11 comes back and you hear the motor hum without the drum turning, or nothing at all, stop using the dryer and plan on a motor test.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • E11 returns on a GFDN/GFDS dryer after the belt and drum turn freely: GE's guide points to the drive motor or its built-in centrifugal switch, which means replacing the motor.
  • The motor hums but doesn't start, smells hot, or trips its overload and shuts off.
  • You see scorched wiring or a burned connector at the motor or control board.
  • On a Profile dryer, E11 keeps returning after the vent run is clean: a technician can use service mode's blower test, which reads blower speed to report the exhaust as open, dirty, or blocked.
  • Any time you smell gas or burning, unplug the dryer, shut off the gas, and call for service. GE Appliances Factory Service books repairs at repair.geappliances.com.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

โš™

GE dryer drive motor (exact part for your model)

Only if testing confirms the motor or its centrifugal switch has failed; the switch isn't sold separately.
