GE Microwave Shows "FOOD": Door Not Opened Reminder (What It Means and What to Do)

What the code means

GE Appliances explains that some microwave models have a built-in 5-minute internal timer as a safety feature that keeps the microwave from cooking with nothing inside, since running empty can make the appliance overheat. Opening and closing the door activates the door latch switch and starts that 5-minute timer, which tells the control that food has been placed inside. If you put the food in, wait longer than that window, or press Start without the door having been opened and closed, the display shows "FOOD" or "Insert Food" because the microwave thinks food hasn't been added yet. GE's fix is to open and close the door again and press Start. GE owner's manuals (for example the PCHK11S1 countertop model) and GE's microwave drawer message list say the same thing: the control detected that the door has not been opened, as a reminder that the food or beverage has not been placed inside. FOOD is different from GE's real fault codes such as F1/F2 (thermal sensor), F3 (shorted touch pad) and F4/F5 (humidity sensor), and from ERR (door opened or no steam detected during sensor cooking) and LOC (control lock).

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Open the door, close it firmly, and press Start right away. GE says this clears the FOOD message.
  2. If you set up a program slowly, open and close the door again just before pressing Start.
  3. Press Cancel/Off (or Clear/Off) to clear the display, then start over: door open, food in, door closed, choose the program, Start.
  4. Make sure nothing is keeping the door from closing fully, such as a dish, food residue on the door edge or a bent latch hook you can see from outside.
  5. Don't open the case to test the door switches. Microwaves hold a high-voltage capacitor that can stay charged even when unplugged.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • FOOD keeps appearing even though you open and close the door before pressing Start: have the door latch switches checked, since the control may not be seeing the door open.
  • The microwave also won't start, stops mid-cycle, or shows F codes: schedule service. GE says a trained service technician should diagnose fault codes that won't clear.
  • The door doesn't latch, is cracked or bent, or you see sparks or smell burning: stop using it and call for repair.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

Microwave door latch switch

Only if a technician confirms the switch isn't registering the door opening. Match your exact model number; FOOD itself is a normal reminder, not a sign of a failed part.
