Code: 7P1 (IdL)🔥 Goodman Gas Furnace

Goodman Furnace 7P1 Code: It's Really IdL (Idle), Read Upside Down (Meaning, What to Check)

What the code means

Newer single-stage Goodman and Amana furnaces (for example the GM9S96 and GR9S96 families) show status on a three-character seven-segment display on the control board instead of blinking an LED. Goodman's status menu lists IdL as Idle, and its installation manual describes the idle state as the system awaiting input. Because the board is often mounted so you look at it upside down through the blower door or from below, the characters I, d and L turned 180 degrees look like 7, P and 1, so people search for '7P1'. Goodman doesn't list a 7P1 code at all. Some websites describe 7P1 as an inducer or pressure-switch fault, but that doesn't match Goodman's documents, so this page follows Goodman's chart. When the thermostat closes its R and W contacts for heat, Goodman's sequence of operation says the board starts the inducer and ignition and the display changes to gH; for cooling it shows 1AC or 2AC, and for fan only it shows FAn. Real faults on these boards begin with E (for example EE0, EE2 or EE3). If you want to check for past problems, Goodman's main menu includes Err (active alarm) and L6F (last 6 faults).

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Turn off power at the furnace/HVAC service switch and the breaker before opening panels. Shut the gas valve before any work near the burners, and never disconnect or alter the gas line. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility.

  1. Look at the display from the right side up. If the board is mounted upside down, 7P1 is IdL, and that is Idle, not an error.
  2. If the house is comfortable and nothing is supposed to be running, you don't need to do anything.
  3. If you want heat, set the thermostat to Heat and raise the setpoint a few degrees above room temperature. On a call for heat, the board should start the inducer motor and the display should change to gH.
  4. Replace the thermostat batteries if it has them, and check that its screen is on.
  5. If you have a condensate pump or a float switch on a drain pan or drain line, check whether it's full or tripped; empty the water and see if the call comes back.
  6. With the power off at the furnace switch, check that the thermostat wires are seated at the thermostat. Turning the furnace switch off for a minute and back on is a reasonable reset.
  7. If the display shows a code starting with E instead of IdL, look that code up; that's a real fault.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The thermostat is clearly set to Heat above room temperature, but the display stays on IdL and nothing starts. A technician can check whether 24 volts is reaching the W terminal on the board.
  • Thermostat wiring is damaged inside walls, or you're unsure which wire goes where.
  • The display alternates IdL with an E code, or shows an E code when you call for heat.
  • The display is blank or shows 888 constantly, which isn't the normal idle state.
