Gree Mini Split Error Code EA: Refrigerant Leak Detected (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Gree's R-32 units with a built-in refrigerant sensor use EA for a refrigerant leak. The All Match floor/ceiling owner's manual lists EA as "Refrigerant leakage alarm" and explains that the sensor watches for R-32 leaks in real time; when it detects one it sounds a buzzer, the indoor unit displays EA and the outdoor unit stops running. Gree's FLEXX Ultra air handler (A-coil) service manual calls it "Indoor unit refrigerant leakage protection": the indoor fan is forced on to dilute the refrigerant while the outdoor unit (and, on furnace setups, the furnace gas valve) is shut off. On the matching FLEXX Ultra outdoor unit, EA ("Internal refrigerant leakage protection") shows on the outdoor board when the indoor unit reports the leak, either over its communication wiring or through a 24 V signal. EA is different from FE, which Gree uses when the refrigerant sensor itself has failed, lost communication or reached the end of its 15-year life. Older Gree R-410A models without a leak sensor don't list EA in their code tables, so check the code list in your own manual.
Likely causes
- A real refrigerant leak in the piping or line set connections. Gree's service manual names the piping system first.
- A leak in the indoor heat exchanger (coil), which Gree lists as the other likely spot.
- On a ducted or furnace setup, the outdoor unit can show EA because the indoor unit or air handler sent its leak signal, so the leak is usually found on or near the indoor side, not in the outdoor unit itself.
- Rarely, a fault in the sensor signal path. Gree lists the indoor leak sensor detecting refrigerant and the outdoor board receiving the leak signal as the two things behind EA; a sensor that has failed outright normally shows FE instead.
Safe DIY checks
R-32 is a mildly flammable refrigerant. When EA appears, ventilate the room and keep ignition sources away. Refrigerant handling, brazing and recharging must be done by a certified technician (in the US, EPA Section 608 certification is required).
- Treat it as a real leak. Open windows to ventilate the room, put out any open flame and don't switch heaters or other spark sources on or off near the unit. Gree's owner's manual says to ventilate, check for fire sources, then leave the room and call for service.
- Let the indoor fan keep running if it does; Gree forces it on to spread out the refrigerant.
- Don't keep resetting the unit to make the code go away. Gree's fix is to find and repair the leak, then re-evacuate and recharge the system.
- Keep oil and water away from the indoor unit's sensor area. Gree warns that splashes can damage the refrigerant sensor.
- Call a licensed HVAC technician and tell them the unit showed EA, the model number and whether the alarm beeped.
๐ When to call a pro
- Leak-test the piping, flare or brazed connections and the indoor coil using a method approved for flammable R-32 refrigerant.
- Repair the leak, then pressure-test, evacuate and recharge to the nameplate charge, as Gree's EA troubleshooting step says.
- If no leak can be found, check the sensor wiring and the leak-signal path between the indoor and outdoor boards (communication wiring, or the 24 V leak signal terminal on FLEXX Ultra systems).
- If the sensor reports a fault or end of life, the code is FE rather than EA; replace the sensor with the Gree part for that indoor model.
- On air handlers where the coil is reconfigured during installation, confirm the refrigerant sensor was moved to the correct side as the FLEXX Ultra A-coil manual describes.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Refrigerant leak detector
For a technician to trace the leak. On R-32 systems the detector must be suitable for flammable refrigerants.
