Gree Mini Split Error Code F0: Refrigerant Protection, Low Refrigerant or Leak (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 ยท Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Gree's service manuals list F0 as refrigerant leakage protection, also worded as insufficient refrigerant ("insufficient fluorine") protection or refrigerant lack. Gree's F0 troubleshooting guide explains that the lockout is triggered when the indoor coil (evaporator) sensor does not see enough temperature change over time, which is what happens when there isn't enough refrigerant flowing. Depending on the model, the whole unit stops, or in cooling the compressor and outdoor fan stop while the indoor fan keeps running. Gree's guide says F0 will not clear until the cause is fixed. Don't confuse it with F1 to F4, which on many Gree units are the indoor ambient, indoor coil, outdoor ambient and outdoor coil temperature sensors, or with Fo, which a technician turns on with the remote's Light button to pump the refrigerant back into the outdoor unit before moving or servicing the system.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Refrigerant work requires an EPA-certified technician, and adding refrigerant to a leaking system without repairing the leak just postpones the next F0. Many newer Gree units use R32, which is mildly flammable, so never use an open flame near a suspected leak. Turn off power before cleaning the coils, and keep the outdoor unit's covers on, since inverter units store a dangerous charge even after the power is off.

  1. Check that the display reads F0 (zero) and not Fo (letter o). Fo means someone started refrigerant recovery mode, and Gree's manuals say it ends on its own after 25 minutes or when the unit gets any remote signal.
  2. Clean or replace the indoor unit's air filters and make sure nothing blocks the indoor unit or the outdoor unit's coil. Gree lists dirty heat exchangers and blocked airflow as causes.
  3. Gently rinse a dirty outdoor coil with a garden hose (power off first, no pressure washer), and clear leaves, snow or debris from around the outdoor unit.
  4. Do Gree's hard reset: turn off the breaker or outdoor disconnect for a full ten minutes, then turn it back on. Gree's guide uses this step to tell a sensor fault from a charge problem, so note whether the system restarts and tell your technician.
  5. If the system was installed recently, call the installer first. Gree's guide says missing install charge for the line-set length is a common F0 cause, and that is an installation fix.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F0 returns after cleaning and a hard reset. A technician connects gauges and compares the pressure to the outdoor temperature on a pressure-temperature chart, which is Gree's first diagnostic step.
  • The system does not come back on after the ten-minute reset. Gree's guide says the indoor coil sensor is likely faulty; it should be measured against Gree's resistance chart and replaced if out of range.
  • Pressure is low. Gree says the only way to verify the charge is to recover the refrigerant, weigh it and compare it with the model's requirement for the installed line-set length. Short with the correct install charge means a leak.
  • There is a leak. Gree's guide calls for finding it with an electronic detector or soap solution, repairing it, pressure testing, evacuating and recharging by weight to the specified charge.
  • Charge and sensor check out but F0 persists. The technician inspects the expansion valve for corrosion and checks the strainer for a restriction, comparing temperatures on both sides.
