Indesit Washing Machine F12 Error Code: Display Board Communication Fault

Reviewed 2026-10-26 ยท Based on 2 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Indesit Service UK's washing machine error code guide lists F12 as "Electronic control fault", with the symptom that the washing machine is not operating (turning on), and the advice to call Indesit to book an engineer. Indesit's technical documentation for the WIL10 washer dryer (the French service file, mod. WIL10FR) gives the engineer's definition: F12 means there is no communication between the display/LED board (the control panel behind the buttons and lights) and the power board (the main board that drives the motor, pump and heater). The service steps, in order, are: check the contacts of connector J11 on the power board; check the continuity of the wiring between connector J11 and the 5-way connector on the display board; replace the power board; and only then replace the display/LED board. In other words, the cheap check is the plug and the cable that links the two boards, which can work loose after the machine is moved or get damaged by damp. For contrast, the same Indesit guide lists F09 as a software fault (multiple flashing lights, unable to select a programme) and F13 as a dryer temperature sensing fault on washer dryers.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Switch off at the wall and unplug the machine for at least 2 minutes, then plug it back in and try a programme. If F12 doesn't come back, keep an eye on it.
  2. If water or washing is trapped inside and the machine won't respond, drain it through the pump filter at the bottom front (have towels and a shallow tray ready) before forcing anything.
  3. Check the socket and plug: try another appliance in the same socket and avoid extension leads, since an unreliable supply can make the boards misbehave.
  4. If the machine has been wet recently (a leak, a flood, or water over the top panel), unplug it and let it dry out thoroughly for a day before trying again.
  5. If you're experienced with appliance repairs: with the machine unplugged, remove the top panel and check that the plug linking the control panel to the main board is fully seated at both ends and that the cable isn't trapped or chafed. Replacing either board is model-specific, so if the wiring looks fine, stop there and book an engineer, as Indesit advises.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F12 comes back after a power reset: Indesit recommends booking an engineer.
  • You see scorch marks, a burning smell, or signs of water on either board: the board needs replacing and the leak needs finding first.
  • The wiring checks out: the next steps in Indesit's procedure are replacing the power board and then the display board, which usually have to be matched or programmed for your exact model.
  • The machine is under warranty: contact Indesit service rather than opening it up.
