Indesit Washer Dryer F13 Error Code: Dryer Temperature Sensor Fault
What the code means
Indesit Service UK's washing machine error code guide lists F13 as "Dryer temperature sensing fault (washer dryers only)", with the symptom that the washer dryer is not drying clothes, and the advice to call Indesit to book an engineer. Indesit's technical documentation for the WIL10 washer dryer (the French service file, mod. WIL10FR) gives the engineer's definition: F13 means the drying NTC probe is open, or the NTC wiring of the drying system is disconnected. An NTC is a thermistor, a temperature sensor whose resistance drops as it heats up. The control board uses it to watch the temperature of the air the dryer heater blows into the drum; if the reading is missing, the board stops drying rather than run the heater blind. The service steps, in order, are: check the contacts of connector J10 on the board; measure the sensor across pins 7 and 8 of J10, which should read about 20 kilohms at a room temperature of 20°C; check the wiring between J10 and the sensor; replace the sensor; and only then replace the board. The same document lists the neighbouring drying codes for contrast: F14 is the drying heater element open or unplugged, and F15 is the drying heater stuck on (a welded relay or shorted triac). Hotpoint washer dryers share Indesit's electronics and use F13 the same way.
Likely causes
- Failed drying NTC temperature sensor in the dryer heater housing
- Loose or corroded connector at the sensor or at the board (connector J10 on the WIL10 service file)
- Broken or disconnected wiring between the board and the sensor, for example after the machine has been moved or worked on
- Failed main control board, once the sensor and wiring test good (Indesit's last step)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Switch off and unplug the machine for at least 2 minutes, plug it back in and try a drying programme on its own. If F13 doesn't come back, keep an eye on it.
- If the machine stopped with water or wet clothes inside, run a rinse and spin or drain programme, or drain it through the pump filter at the bottom front, before opening the door.
- You can keep washing and spinning while you wait for a repair; just don't select drying, so the fault doesn't keep tripping.
- If you're experienced with appliance repairs: with the machine unplugged, remove the top panel, find the sensor on the dryer heater housing and check its plug is firmly seated. Indesit's figure is about 20 kilohms across the sensor at 20°C; a reading of open circuit (no reading) means the sensor or its wiring has failed.
- Replacing the sensor usually means opening the heater housing and resealing it afterwards. If that's more than you want to take on, stop here and book an engineer, as Indesit advises.
🛠 When to call a pro
- F13 comes back after a power reset: Indesit recommends booking an engineer.
- The sensor looks melted or scorched, or you smell burning: the drying system may have overheated for another reason, which needs a proper diagnosis.
- The sensor and wiring test good but F13 remains: the next step in Indesit's procedure is the main control board, which usually has to be matched or programmed for your model.
- The machine is under warranty: contact Indesit service rather than opening it up.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
