Rinnai Tankless Error Code 17: Venturi Blockage (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Rinnai's diagnostic code lists name code 17 Venturi Blockage. The venturi sits where the gas valve meets the combustion fan, and it is where incoming air and gas are mixed before the burner. Rinnai's Troubleshooting Tankless Water Heater Diagnostic Codes manual says code 17 applies to SENSEI models (the current edition also lists SENSEI RX/CX). Its steps start outside the unit: confirm the condensate drain line is draining, then inspect the whole vent system (intake air, exhaust chamber and vent termination) for obstructions. Only then does it have the venturi checked, by removing the gas valve and venturi assembly from the fan motor, cleaning out debris and reinstalling it. Rinnai's RUR installation and operation manual adds that you should first work through the fixes for code 10 (air supply or exhaust blockage, or a full condensate trap), and only if those don't clear it check the venturi and call Rinnai's technical department. After cleaning, Rinnai gives a specific reset sequence on the PC board, and that manual notes the E step of the sequence only appears when code 17 or code 52 is occurring.
Likely causes
- Debris or build-up inside the venturi assembly between the gas valve and the fan motor
- A condensate drain line that is blocked, kinked or not draining, which Rinnai lists as the first thing to check
- An obstruction somewhere in the vent system: the intake air path, the exhaust chamber or the vent termination outside
- Problems that also cause code 10, such as blocked combustion air or exhaust vents, a vent run beyond Rinnai's length limits, a dirty internal air filter on indoor units, debris in the fan or a stuck check valve between the fan casing and burner body
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Write down the code and your model number. Code 17 applies to Rinnai SENSEI condensing models, and the exact reset steps differ between model families.
- If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- Check that the condensate drain line from the heater is draining freely and isn't kinked, crushed, clogged or frozen.
- Go outside and look at the vent termination (intake and exhaust). Clear away leaves, nests, snow, ice or anything else blocking it.
- On indoor models, Rinnai's code 10 steps include making sure the internal air filter is clean; your owner's manual shows whether your model has one and how to reach it.
- Leave the venturi itself alone. Rinnai's procedure has the gas valve and venturi assembly removed from the fan motor, which is gas work for a licensed technician.
- If code 17 comes back, contact a licensed plumber or gas technician, or Rinnai. If the heater is under warranty, talk to Rinnai or an authorized technician before anyone replaces parts.
🛠 When to call a pro
- Working through Rinnai's code 10 checks first: condensate line, internal air filter on indoor units, high-altitude setting, approved venting materials, vent length within limits, fan wheel free of debris and turning freely, and the check valve between fan casing and burner body not stuck.
- Inspecting the entire vent system, including the intake air path, exhaust chamber and vent termination, for obstructions.
- Removing the gas valve and venturi assembly from the fan motor, inspecting the venturi for blockage or debris build-up, cleaning it and reinstalling it.
- Running Rinnai's PC board reset after cleaning. In the Rinnai troubleshooting manual's sequence, with the controller off, button B is pressed for 1 second at a time to step through t, F, S and E (E appears only with code 17 or 52), then A and B are held together for 10 seconds until ECL shows. Check the manual for your model, since sequences differ by series.
- Calling Rinnai's technical department if the code persists after the venturi is clean, as Rinnai's manuals direct.
