Rinnai Tankless Error Code 52: Gas Valve (Modulating Solenoid Valve) Signal Problem (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Rinnai's Troubleshooting Tankless Water Heater Diagnostic Codes manual (100000652) lists Code 52 as "Gas Valve" for both SENSEI and non-SENSEI series. For SENSEI models, its steps are: check the flame rod and its wiring, check the gas solenoid wiring harness for loose or damaged terminals, measure the gas valve solenoid at connector D on the PC board (black wire pin 27 and yellow wire pin 29, 18 to 22 ohms or 11 to 13 VDC while the heater tries to fire), and replace the gas valve and venturi assembly. If 52 persists after the new valve is in, a reset is done from buttons on the PC board, and if that doesn't clear it Rinnai says to contact its technical support. For non-SENSEI models the manual calls it "Modulating Solenoid Valve Signal Abnormal (POV)": check the harness from the POV valve back to the PC board, measure the POV coil resistance against the tech data sheet on the back of the front panel (an open coil means replacing the gas valve), check voltage to the valve while the heater tries to fire, and replace the PC board if 52 still appears. The SENSEI installation and operation manual's code table summarizes 52 the same way: check the flame rod and wire, check the gas solenoid valve for an open or short circuit, replace the gas valve assembly, and call Rinnai's technical department.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance and shut off its gas valve before working on it; never disconnect or alter the gas line. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility.

  1. Write down the exact code and your model number (on the rating plate). Rinnai's steps differ between SENSEI and non-SENSEI models.
  2. Turn the heater off at the temperature controller, then disconnect its power and restore it. The SENSEI manual's code table says some codes clear by resetting the main power supply; if 52 comes straight back, the fault is real.
  3. With power and gas off, look for anything obviously unplugged, burned or chafed where wiring leads to the gas valve and circuit board. Rinnai's first step for both series is checking that harness for loose, broken or damaged connections.
  4. Stop there if you aren't trained on gas appliances. The remaining steps, measuring the valve coil and replacing the gas valve or board, are service procedures in Rinnai's manual, and Rinnai's owner-facing table says to call its technical department.
  5. If the heater is still under warranty, contact Rinnai or your installer before anyone replaces parts.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • Code 52 comes back after a power reset.
  • The gas valve coil or harness needs testing with a meter. Rinnai gives the SENSEI values at connector D (18 to 22 ohms or 11 to 13 VDC) and says non-SENSEI coil values are on the tech data sheet behind the front panel.
  • The gas valve, gas valve and venturi assembly, or PC board needs replacing.
  • The code persists after a new gas valve on a SENSEI model. Rinnai's board-level reset applies, and if it doesn't clear, Rinnai says to call its technical support.
  • You smell gas: leave the house and call your gas supplier from outside.
