Trane / American Standard Error 126.00: Equipment Change Alert (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
On Trane's communicating systems (ComfortLink II thermostats such as the XL824, XL850 and XL1050, and the matching American Standard AccuLink controls), the thermostat auto-discovers and remembers every communicating unit on the bus, such as the outdoor unit and the indoor furnace or air handler, when the system is first powered. Trane's communicating systems service manual defines Err 126 as 'equipment does not match value stored at startup', and Trane's System Alert Guide describes ERR.126.00 as 'equipment reporting does not match the equipment originally discovered'. In other words, a unit that was enabled has stopped reporting. The XL850 installer guide says 126.00 is typically triggered when a device in the Summary Table shows Enabled plus Offline. The service manual notes that the indoor unit's display and the outdoor unit's fault LED show nothing for this alert, so the thermostat is the only place you'll see it. If the missing unit is the outdoor heat pump or AC, you can lose cooling or heat-pump heating until it comes back. The alert clears once the missing unit reports again or is removed from the thermostat's memory.
Likely causes
- The outdoor unit's breaker or disconnect is off or tripped (Trane's service manual lists this first)
- A brief power flicker left a unit's control board not reporting on the communication bus (Trane's System Alert Guide)
- An open fuse or failed transformer on the outdoor unit's low-voltage side
- Open, loose or damaged field low-voltage wiring to the outdoor unit, including the communication (D and B) wires
- A failed communicating control board on the unit that went offline
- A unit was removed or replaced on purpose and the thermostat still remembers the old one
Safe DIY checks
Turn off power at the furnace/HVAC service switch and the breaker before opening panels.
- Note every alert on the thermostat. On a ComfortLink II thermostat, open the Service Menu, then Diagnostics to see current alerts and the Summary Table.
- In the Summary Table, look for a device listed as Enabled but Offline. That's the unit the thermostat has lost, and it tells you where to look.
- Check that the breakers for the outdoor unit and the furnace or air handler are on, the outdoor disconnect is in, and the furnace service switch is on. Reset a tripped breaker once; if it trips again, stop and call a technician.
- If nothing was tripped, Trane's alert guide says a power flicker can leave a unit not reporting: turn off power to each unit that went missing (indoor and outdoor breakers), wait a few minutes, then turn them back on.
- Give the system a few minutes to rediscover equipment. The alert clears by itself when the missing unit reports again.
- If a unit really was removed from the system, Trane's XL850 guide says offline devices can be selected and removed from the Summary Table. Don't remove a unit that's still installed; that only hides the problem.
- If the code comes back, Trane's alert guide has the technician check the voltage between the D and B terminals at the offline unit: about 12 VDC means good communication, about 16 VDC means communication is lost. That, plus the fuse, transformer and wiring checks, is service work.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The breaker for the outdoor unit or the furnace trips again after you reset it.
- 126.00 returns after a full power cycle, which points to wiring, a blown low-voltage fuse, a transformer or a control board.
- The Summary Table shows a unit offline that's clearly powered and running.
- You've lost cooling or heat-pump heating, or the alert appeared alongside other codes.
- Equipment was recently replaced and the thermostat needs to be reconfigured.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Digital multimeter
For checking low-voltage power and the D-to-B communication voltage (about 12 VDC is normal per Trane).
Search eBay →Communicating control board
Only after a technician confirms a failed board on the offline unit. Boards are model-specific.
