Whirlpool Dryer F01 (F-01 / F1 E1): Main Control Failure (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 7 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Whirlpool's service tech sheets for its electronic dryers (including many Duet and Cabrio models) list F-01 as a Primary Control Failure: the dryer's machine control electronics have flagged an internal problem, and the recommended repair is to replace the machine control electronics. Newer Whirlpool and Maytag dryers show the same family of fault as F1 E1, alternating F1 and E1 on the display. On those models the tech sheets call it a Main Control (ACU) fault and say it can also mean no voltage was detected at the heater relay, so loose wires at the heater or the relays on the control are checked before the board is replaced. Whirlpool's product help says any code that alternates between F# and E# means the control has found a problem that needs service. On Whirlpool compact heat pump dryers, F01 through F04 are cleared by holding the Power button for 3 seconds and restarting.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the circuit breaker (electric dryers use a double breaker) or unplug it, and leave it off for 5 minutes, as Whirlpool's product help recommends.
  2. Turn the power back on, start a Timed Dry cycle, and watch the dryer for at least one minute to see whether F01 comes back.
  3. Check your home's breaker panel and fuses. If one side of the dryer's breaker has tripped or a fuse is blown, reset or replace it once.
  4. Make sure the dryer's power cord is fully plugged in and the outlet isn't loose or scorched. If the outlet looks damaged, stop and have an electrician look at it.
  5. If you have a Whirlpool compact heat pump dryer, touch and hold Power for at least 3 seconds to clear the code, then restart and watch it for 5 minutes.
  6. Write down your model number (on a label inside the door opening or on the back) before calling for service or ordering a control board, since boards are model-specific.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • F01 or F1 E1 comes back right after a 5-minute power reset. Whirlpool says to contact them or schedule service at that point.
  • Replacing the main control board. Boards are sensitive to static, so Whirlpool's sheets call for an anti-static wrist strap and handling the board by its edges.
  • Checking voltage at the control, the heater relay or the heater element. That's live 240V work and needs a qualified technician.
  • The breaker trips again after you reset it, or you smell burning or see scorched wiring. Stop using the dryer.
  • The dryer is still under warranty. Opening it up yourself may affect coverage, so book service instead.
