Bosch Dryer E28 Error Code: Temperature Sensor (NTC) Circuit Fault
What the code means
Bosch's own dryer pages group E28 with E06, E08, E09, E24, E25, E36 and E90 as an electronic fault that only a qualified engineer can fix (Bosch Singapore words the same group as a heating circuit fault). The service-level meaning is more specific. MyPros+, quoting a Bosch dryer service manual (WTG864, test programs and fault codes, p. 3), lists E:28 as an NTC error: a break or short circuit in the NTC sensor or its cables, with the first step being to check the cables and the NTC. The German technician fault table at Der-Servicetechniker lists E28 on Bosch heat pump dryers as a compressor NTC fault (short or open circuit in the NTC or its cable; check wiring and NTC), and ersatzteilshop.de says E28 usually points to the temperature sensor at the compressor or its wiring. An NTC is a small thermistor whose resistance changes with temperature; when the control reads an impossible value (open or shorted), it stops the dryer and shows E28. Which sensor is involved depends on the model, so the technician should confirm it from your E-Nr. See also the related Bosch dryer pages for E08 (another NTC fault on some models), E24 and E90.
Likely causes
- A failed NTC temperature sensor, open or shorted (Bosch WTG864 service manual via MyPros+)
- On heat pump dryers, a faulty compressor temperature sensor (Der-Servicetechniker fault table, ersatzteilshop.de)
- A damaged, pinched or loose wire or connector between the sensor and the control (MyPros+, ersatzteilshop.de)
- Less often, a control electronics fault if the sensor and wiring both test good (ersatzteilshop.de)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Write down the exact code and your model number (E-Nr) from the rating label inside the door.
- Power reset: unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker for at least 5 minutes, then power it back on and try a short program. Bosch suggests this for its electronic fault codes.
- If E28 shows up only once and the dryer then runs normally, keep an eye on it and note when it happens.
- If E28 comes back, stop there. Bosch says this group of codes needs an experienced engineer, and the sensors sit inside the cabinet near live parts and, on heat pump models, the compressor.
๐ When to call a pro
- E28 returns after a power reset: call Bosch Customer Support at 1-800-944-2904 (US) or book an authorized technician, and give them your E-Nr.
- Ask them to measure the NTC sensor and check its wiring and connectors first, since Bosch service material lists those as the first checks.
- If the sensor and harness test good, the control electronics may need diagnosis; boards are model-specific.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Dryer temperature sensor (NTC thermistor)
Only after a technician confirms which NTC failed. On heat pump models it's often the compressor sensor. Match the part to your Bosch E-Nr.
Search eBay โDryer control board
Only if the sensor and wiring test good. Boards are model-specific; match your E-Nr.
