Frigidaire Microwave SE Error Code: Shorted or Stuck Keypad (What to Do)

Reviewed 2026-10-25 ยท Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Frigidaire's official support team, answering owners on Fixya, has described SE in the same terms several times: the code relates to a shorted keypad, or in another answer, the keypad is stuck. Because the control reads a shorted key exactly as if someone were pressing it nonstop, the microwave may beep repeatedly, ignore other buttons, or refuse to start. Frigidaire's first step is a power reset: switch off the household circuit breaker or unplug the microwave, wait about ten minutes, then restore power, which clears many false error codes. If the code doesn't clear, Frigidaire says the keypad would need to be replaced and that this isn't a simple DIY job. One owner asked about a 5E code, and Frigidaire's answer was that the code is SE, so if your display seems to read 5E, it's this same fault. Technicians on Fixya and iFixit add two more possibilities behind the same code: a loose or poorly seated ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board, and less often a failed electronic control board.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Microwaves store lethal voltage in the high-voltage capacitor even when unplugged, and Frigidaire says its microwaves should be serviced only by qualified service personnel. Don't open the cabinet to reach the keypad connector unless you're trained to do it safely.

  1. Turn off the microwave's circuit breaker or unplug it, wait about ten minutes, then restore power. This is Frigidaire's first step and clears many false codes.
  2. Look at the keypad for anything pressing on it or a sticky spot around one key. Wipe the panel with a soft cloth lightly dampened with mild soapy water, then dry it. Don't spray cleaner directly onto the keypad.
  3. If you suspect steam or water got into the panel (for example after heavy boiling on the cooktop below), leave the microwave unplugged or the breaker off overnight with the door open so it can dry, then try again.
  4. If SE comes right back with nobody touching the panel, stop and plan on a keypad or control panel replacement. Write down the full model and serial number from the label inside the door frame so the right part is ordered.
  5. Leave the control panel removal and ribbon cable checks to a technician, or to someone who knows how to work safely around a microwave's high-voltage parts, as Frigidaire recommends.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • SE returns after a ten-minute power reset: book service. Frigidaire's customer line in its current microwave use and care guide is 1-800-374-4432 (Canada 1-800-265-8352).
  • The microwave starts, stops, or beeps on its own: keep it switched off at the breaker until a technician has checked the keypad and control board.
  • A new keypad didn't clear SE: have a technician check the ribbon connection and the electronic control board before buying more parts.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

Microwave touchpad / membrane keypad

The usual fix for SE. On many Frigidaire models it comes as a control panel assembly. Match your full model number.
