Fujitsu Mini Split Error Code 51: Indoor Unit Fan Motor Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Fujitsu's service manuals list E:51 as "Indoor unit fan motor error (Indoor unit)", detected by the indoor main PCB. On wall-mounted models it sets when the actual rotation of the indoor fan motor stays below 1/3 of the target speed for more than 56 seconds; ducted models also set it when the board sees 0 rpm for 56 seconds after the motor starts. The detailed code splits into 51.1 (indoor unit fan motor 1 lock error) and 51.2 (indoor unit fan motor 1 rotation speed error). On units without a wired remote it shows as 5 Operation light flashes and 1 Timer light flash, with the Economy light flashing continuously. Fujitsu's listed causes are fan rotation failure, an open fan motor winding, motor protection from a rise in surrounding temperature, a control (main or power supply) PCB failure and indoor fan motor failure.
Likely causes
- The indoor fan wheel (blower) is caught, has slipped or dropped off the motor shaft, or is blocked by debris, so it can't turn freely.
- A worn or seized fan bearing, or a locked fan motor (shown as 51.1, fan motor lock error).
- A failed indoor fan motor, including an open motor winding (often shown as 51.2, rotation speed error).
- Too much heat around the motor, which makes the motor protect itself. Fujitsu says to check for nearby equipment that gives off heat.
- A failed fan capacitor, on models that have one.
- A failed indoor main PCB or power supply PCB that isn't driving the motor correctly (checked last, after the fan and motor).
Safe DIY checks
Always switch off power at the breaker and outdoor disconnect before touching the blower wheel, and never put fingers into the outlet of a running unit. Motor resistance tests, fan wheel or bearing replacement and board replacement mean opening the indoor unit and should be left to a licensed HVAC technician.
- Read the light pattern: 5 Operation flashes, 1 Timer flash and a continuously flashing Economy light means E:51.
- Turn the system off at the breaker or disconnect and wait until the fan has completely stopped.
- With power off, look into the indoor unit's air outlet with a flashlight for anything caught in the blower wheel, such as a loose louver piece, debris or a heavy mold or dust buildup. Remove only what you can reach safely without taking the unit apart.
- With power still off, gently try turning the blower wheel by hand (for example with a wooden spoon handle through the outlet). Fujitsu's first check is whether it turns freely. A wheel that's stiff, grinds, wobbles or won't move points to the fan, bearing or motor.
- Check for anything putting heat near the indoor unit, such as a space heater, a lamp or electronics right under or beside it, and move it away. Let the unit cool, then restore power and run it. Fujitsu says to restart once the temperature has come down.
- Clean or replace the indoor filters so the fan isn't fighting a clogged intake.
- If E:51 comes back, call the installer or a licensed HVAC technician. The next steps are motor and board tests inside the unit.
๐ When to call a pro
- Fan caught, dropped off or locked motor when rotated by hand with power off: Fujitsu says to replace the fan or bearing.
- Excessive heat around the motor from surrounding equipment: let it cool, remove the heat source and restart.
- Indoor fan motor fails the service-parts check (on DC fan motors, Fujitsu's test is resistance between the Vm and GND terminals; below 300 kฮฉ is a short): replace the indoor fan motor, and on some models the controller PCB with it.
- On models with a fan capacitor, test it with a meter and replace it if it has failed.
- If none of the above corrects it, Fujitsu's last step is replacing the indoor main PCB (wall-mounted) or the power supply PCB (ducted and some other models).
- The system is new or under warranty. Contact the installer or Fujitsu General America technical support (866-952-8324) first.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Indoor fan motor
Fujitsu replaces the indoor fan motor when it fails the rotation or resistance check; match the exact indoor unit model number.
Search eBay โBlower wheel
Replace the indoor fan (cross-flow blower wheel) or its bearing if it's cracked, loose on the shaft or won't turn freely.
Search eBay โIndoor unit main control board
Fujitsu's last step, only after the fan, heat and motor checks; some models use a separate power supply PCB instead.
