Gree Mini Split Error Code H5: IPM Module Protection (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Gree's service manuals list H5 as IPM protection (Jasmine: module protection; Multi21+: IPM modular protection). The IPM, or intelligent power module, on the outdoor control board switches power to the inverter compressor. When it detects a protection condition, the compressor stops. In cooling and dry mode the indoor fan keeps running; in heating the whole unit stops (Jasmine malfunction table). After the compressor has been stopped for at least 3 minutes it tries again. If module protection happens six times in succession, the compressor won't restart on its own and only runs again after power is switched off and back on; the trip count resets once the compressor has run longer than 7 minutes (Multi21+ manual 2.9). Gree troubleshoots H5 together with P5 (compressor phase current overcurrent). On multi-zone units the code shows on the remote within 200 seconds and directly on the outdoor display after that, and on Free Match units the indicator lamp blinks 5 times. Note that IPM overheating (a separate IPM temperature protection) is listed under its own code, P8, on Free Match units, so H5 is the module's protection trip itself.
Likely causes
- Power supply voltage outside the normal range. The Jasmine flowchart checks that the voltage between L and N at the terminal block is within 210 to 250 VAC.
- Loose, damaged or wrongly sequenced compressor wires (U, V, W) between the outdoor control board and the compressor.
- A failing compressor: unequal winding resistance between the three terminals, or poor insulation between the windings and the copper pipe.
- The system is overloaded or can't get rid of heat: dirty indoor or outdoor coils, the outdoor unit covered or blocked, or an indoor or outdoor fan not running properly.
- System pressure too high, including from too much refrigerant charge.
- A faulty outdoor control board (the IPM itself), which Gree's flowchart lists as the replacement once wiring, voltage, compressor and airflow check out.
Safe DIY checks
The IPM sits on the outdoor inverter board, which holds a high DC voltage even after power is switched off. Don't open the outdoor unit; leave voltage, compressor and refrigerant checks to a qualified HVAC technician.
- Note when H5 shows up: right at start-up, or after the unit has run for a while. Gree's flowchart splits the diagnosis on exactly that point, so it helps the technician.
- Clear anything around the outdoor unit that blocks airflow (covers, plants, snow, debris), and clean or rinse the outdoor coil and the indoor filters.
- Check that both the indoor and outdoor fans spin when the unit runs.
- If the unit has locked out, switch it off at the breaker or disconnect for a few minutes and restore power. Gree's manuals say the lockout after six trips only clears this way.
- If H5 comes back after cleaning and a power reset, stop resetting it repeatedly and book a service call, since the remaining checks involve live voltage and the compressor.
๐ When to call a pro
- Before touching the outdoor board, discharge the capacitors and confirm the voltage is below 20 V, as Gree's Multi21+ manual instructs.
- Measure supply voltage at the outdoor terminal block (Jasmine flowchart: 210 to 250 VAC between L and N) and correct the supply if it's out of range.
- Check the compressor U, V and W leads against the wiring diagram for tightness and correct sequence.
- Measure the resistance between the three compressor terminals; they should be almost the same. Then measure each terminal to the copper pipe; Gree's flowchart calls for more than 500 ohms, otherwise replace the compressor.
- Check for high system pressure or overcharge and correct it according to the service manual.
- If voltage, wiring, compressor, airflow and charge are all fine and H5 persists, replace the outdoor control board per Gree's flowchart.
