Gree Mini Split Error Code L3: Outdoor Fan (DC Fan Motor) Malfunction (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Gree's Mini After-sales Service Manual (error code list for split and floor-standing units) and its console service manual define L3 as a malfunction of the outdoor fan or of the outdoor DC fan motor. On units with two outdoor fans, L3 means fan 1 and LA means fan 2. When L3 is active in Cool or Dry, everything stops except the indoor fan; in Heat, all loads stop. The fault-finding flowchart in Gree's GWHD outdoor unit service manual ("DC fan malfunction") checks for foreign objects blocking the fan, then for a loose DC fan connection wire, and if both are fine, replaces the outdoor main board. Note that on some Gree commercial ducted and VRF systems the same letters can mean something else (for example a water-full or overflow alarm), so confirm your model's manual if you have a larger system.
Likely causes
- The outdoor condenser coil, air inlet or air outlet is blocked by dirt, leaves or debris (Gree's first listed cause).
- The fan blade is blocked by something (ice, a branch, a nest) or has worked loose on the motor shaft.
- The DC fan motor or its connection wire is damaged, or the motor plug on the outdoor board is loose.
- The outdoor unit's main board (the part that drives the DC fan) is faulty.
Safe DIY checks
Always shut off power at the outdoor disconnect or breaker before touching the fan. Inverter outdoor boards can hold a dangerous charge for several minutes after power is removed, so motor, wiring and board checks should be left to a qualified HVAC technician.
- Turn the system off at the remote, then switch off the outdoor unit's disconnect or breaker before going near the fan.
- Look through the fan grille: clear away leaves, branches, snow or ice, and make sure nothing is touching the blade. In winter, let ice melt rather than chipping at it.
- Clean the outdoor coil and clear 2 to 3 feet around the unit so air can flow in and out. Gree lists a dirty or blocked condenser and air inlet/outlet as the first cause of L3.
- With the power still off, gently turn the fan blade by hand. It should spin freely and not wobble. A stiff, grinding or loose blade points to a motor or blade problem for a technician.
- Restore power, wait a few minutes and restart. If L3 returns, call a licensed HVAC technician or your installer; the remaining checks are inside the outdoor unit.
๐ When to call a pro
- Follow Gree's DC fan malfunction flowchart: check for foreign objects blocking the outdoor fan; if clear, check that the DC fan motor lead is firmly connected at the outdoor main board; if it is, replace the outdoor main board.
- Before replacing the board, inspect the motor harness for chafed or open wires and confirm the motor itself turns freely; Gree lists a damaged motor or motor wire as a cause.
- On dual-fan outdoor units, L3 refers to fan 1 and LA to fan 2, so check the correct motor.
- Expected behavior with L3 active: in Cool/Dry the indoor fan keeps running while the outdoor unit stops; in Heat all loads stop.
- On Gree commercial ducted, GMV mini VRF and VRF systems, check the system's own code table, since L3 can be assigned to a different fault (such as water-full or overflow protection) there.
