Gree Mini Split Error Code PL: DC Bus Low Voltage Protection (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Gree's code lists call PL "Low voltage protection of bus bar" or "DC busbar under-voltage protection". The DC bus is the high-voltage DC supply the outdoor board makes from your AC power to drive the inverter compressor. Gree's 27 SEER Jasmine service manual says that if the DC bus voltage falls below 150 V (or rises above 420 V, which is PH), the compressor stops and the outdoor fan stops about 30 seconds later; once the voltage is back to normal and the compressor has been off at least 3 minutes, it starts again. While PL is active, cooling and dry modes stop the compressor but keep the indoor fan running, and heating mode stops the whole unit. On the Kinghome / Super Free Match multi-zone outdoor units, the same fault shows as PL on the indoor unit and as 9 flashes of the yellow LED on the outdoor main board. PH, its twin, is DC bus voltage too high.
Likely causes
- Low supply voltage at the outdoor unit. Gree's troubleshooting step is to measure L to N on the outdoor wiring board and, if it reads under 150 VAC, wait for the power to come back up to the normal range.
- Unstable power: voltage sags from the utility, a generator, long or undersized wiring, or other big loads starting on the same circuit.
- A loose, burnt or poorly connected wire at the breaker, disconnect or outdoor terminal block, which drops voltage under load.
- A fault on the outdoor control board (AP1), including its DC bus or voltage-detection circuit. Gree's step when the AC input is normal is to replace the outdoor control board.
Safe DIY checks
The outdoor inverter board holds high-voltage DC on its capacitors even after the power is switched off. Only a qualified technician should open the outdoor unit or take voltage readings on the board, and only after the capacitors have discharged.
- Note when PL shows up. If it appears during brownouts, storms or when other heavy appliances start, the problem is most likely the power supply, not the mini split.
- Turn the unit off at the breaker for a few minutes, then turn it back on. Gree's logic lets the compressor restart by itself once the voltage is normal, so a one-time PL after a power dip is not a fault.
- Check that the outdoor unit's breaker and disconnect are fully on and not hot or discolored. Don't open any cover or touch wiring yourself.
- If PL keeps coming back with normal household power, call a licensed HVAC technician or electrician and tell them the code and when it happens.
๐ When to call a pro
- Measure L to N at the outdoor wiring board (XT) with the unit running. Gree's threshold for this code is under 150 VAC; restore the supply to the normal range before going further.
- Check voltage drop under load: tighten or replace loose, burnt or undersized wiring at the breaker, disconnect and terminal block.
- If the AC input is normal, measure the voltage on the electrolytic capacitor on the outdoor control board AP1, as Gree's Jasmine manual directs, to check the DC bus.
- If the AC input is normal and PL persists, replace the outdoor control board (AP1). Gree's code tables give this as the fix once supply problems are ruled out.
- On Kinghome / Super Free Match multi-zone systems, read the outdoor board LEDs: yellow LED flashing 9 times confirms low voltage protection.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Digital multimeter
For a technician to measure the supply voltage at the outdoor wiring board and the DC bus on the control board.
Search eBay โOutdoor control board
Only if the supply voltage is normal and PL keeps returning. Use the Gree board listed for your outdoor unit model.
Search eBay โNon-contact voltage tester
Handy for quickly confirming a breaker or disconnect is live or off before anyone works near the unit.
