Haier Mini Split Error Code E7: Indoor and Outdoor Units Lost Communication (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 ยท Based on 4 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Haier's service manuals list E7 as "Communication fault between indoor and outdoor units". On the outdoor board the same fault shows as LED1 flashing 15 times. The indoor unit gets its power on terminals 1 and 2 and sends its readings (room temperature, coil temperature and set point) to the outdoor unit on terminal 3. If that signal is broken or garbled, neither unit can run and the indoor display shows E7. Haier's Advanced Series manual specifically warns that any splice in the wires between terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4 can cause E7.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

The outdoor inverter boards hold high DC voltage on their capacitors even after the power is off, and the communication line is live with the unit powered. Only a qualified technician should open the units or take voltage readings, and connectors should only be unplugged with the power off.

  1. Turn the mini split off at the breaker or disconnect, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on. A one-time E7 after a power blip may clear.
  2. Look at the outdoor unit and the visible run of cable for obvious damage, such as chewed, cut or crushed wiring. Don't open covers or touch terminals yourself.
  3. If the system was just installed or the wiring was recently changed, tell the installer. A splice or crossed wire from the install is a common cause.
  4. If E7 keeps returning, call a licensed HVAC technician and give them the code and your model numbers for both units.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • Confirm the interconnect wiring: 14 AWG stranded, terminals 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3 at both units, with no splices on terminals 1 and 3 and tight, clean connections.
  • Haier's FlexFit test: with power on and all wiring connected, measure DC volts between terminals 1 and 3 on the indoor terminal block. A reading that swings between about 8 and 23 VDC means the communication path is working. If it does not fluctuate and the wiring is good, the indoor board is defective.
  • On the multi-split flowchart, a constant 0 to 5 VDC on the communication line, or a reading not close to 18 VDC between the communication line and N with only the indoor unit powered, points to the indoor main board.
  • Check for 230 VAC supply at the outdoor unit and read the outdoor board LEDs (LED1 flashing 15 times for this fault). Follow Haier's checks on the outdoor main board and the module (IPM) board for your model.
  • Disconnect the outdoor DC fan motor and spin it by hand. Haier's Australian distributor notes that a fan that spins freely is not shorted; a hard-to-turn or shorted motor may have damaged the main board and IPM, and then all three need replacing. Match part numbers to the exact model.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.
