Haier Mini Split Error Code F1: IPM (Power Module) Overcurrent Protection (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Haier's service manuals list F1 as "The protection of IPM" (FlexFit: "IPM overcurrent or short circuit"). On the outdoor board the same fault shows as LED1 flashing 2 times. The IPM (intelligent power module, which Haier also calls the module board or power module) drives the inverter compressor. Haier's FlexFit manual explains that F1 means the module board detected excessive instantaneous current to the compressor, and the IPM hardware automatically stopped the module output to protect the compressor. When F1 shows up matters: if it appears before the compressor even starts, Haier points to a faulty power module; if the compressor starts and F1 appears after it has run for a while, Haier points to the refrigerant system or the compressor.
Likely causes
- A faulty power module (IPM board). Haier's flowcharts say that if F1 shows before the compressor starts, the module is faulty and should be replaced.
- A refrigerant system problem that makes the compressor work too hard: overcharge, or a restriction such as a clogged capillary or a faulty electronic expansion valve. Haier also lists undercharge in its multi-split manual.
- A dirty outdoor coil, or a very hot room or heavy load, which raises pressure and compressor current (both listed in Haier's FlexFit manual).
- A seized or failing compressor. Haier's multi-split manual says a compressor with a seized shaft needs replacing.
- Disconnected or loose compressor wiring (listed in Haier's multi-split manual).
Safe DIY checks
The outdoor inverter board and power module hold high DC voltage on their capacitors even after the power is off. Only a qualified technician should open the outdoor unit, discharge and test the module, or work on the refrigerant circuit, which needs EPA certification in the US.
- Turn the mini split off at the breaker or disconnect, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on. A one-time F1 after a power blip or a very hot day may clear.
- Check that the outdoor unit has clear airflow: remove leaves, grass, snow or anything stacked against it, and keep about 2 feet clear around it.
- If the outdoor coil fins look dirty or matted, clean them gently with a garden hose (power off) or a no-rinse coil cleaner. Don't use a pressure washer on the fins.
- Clean or replace the indoor air filters so the system isn't running under extra load.
- If F1 keeps coming back, call a licensed HVAC technician and tell them the code, when it appears (right away or after running a while) and your model numbers for both units.
๐ When to call a pro
- Note when F1 appears. Haier's flowchart: if the error shows before the compressor starts, the power module is faulty and should be replaced.
- With the power off and the capacitors discharged, measure IPM resistance between P and U, V, W, then between N and U, V, W. Haier's multi-split manual says the readings should be similar and between about 1 and 10 megohms; otherwise the IPM module is damaged and needs replacing.
- If the compressor starts normally and F1 appears after it has run for a while, check system pressures for overcharge, undercharge or a restriction (clogged capillary or faulty EEV), and check the outdoor coil and the load on the system.
- Check the compressor wiring to the module (loose or disconnected leads) and the compressor itself. A compressor with a seized shaft needs replacing.
- Haier's Advanced Series manual lists the power module and refrigerant as the spare parts for this fault. Match the module part number to the exact outdoor model.
