Miele Washer F220: Leak Detected or False Alarm (Meaning and Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-26 · Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Miele's support pages in the USA, the UK and Australia describe Fault F220 the same way: "The washing machine is leaking. This is a technical fault that you cannot remedy yourself." The same pages add that the fault may be displayed erroneously when the machine is not leaking, give a simple check to tell the two apart, and say a software update is available for network-enabled machines. Miele parts retailer Euromaxx explains the mechanism: when the machine senses a leak, its water protection system shuts off the water supply, so some retailers (Coolblue, for example) describe F220 as a water supply error, since no water reaches the drum. Either way, the first thing to rule out is water leaking inside or under the machine. F220 is not the same as F10, where the faucet, inlet filter, hose or low pressure stops water coming in; that has its own page.

⚠ Before you start

If you see water around the machine, unplug it before you touch anything near the water, and turn off the faucet feeding it. Don't take the cabinet panels off to hunt for the leak yourself; the inside has mains wiring, and Miele says this is a fault for its technicians.

  1. Unplug the washing machine or switch it off at the wall socket. Miele lists this as the first step.
  2. Check whether water has leaked out of the machine: look on the floor around and under it, and behind it at the hose connections. If you find water, turn off the faucet feeding the washer and leave the machine unplugged.
  3. If there's water, stop here. Miele says a leak is a technical fault you can't fix yourself; book a Miele repair visit.
  4. If everything is dry, plug the machine back in and start any wash program.
  5. If the machine runs normally and F220 doesn't come back, Miele says the code was shown in error and you can keep using the machine.
  6. If your machine is connected to Wi-Fi, make sure it stays connected: Miele says a software update is available for this false F220. If your machine isn't network-enabled, contact Miele Service about the update.
  7. If F220 comes back on a dry machine, contact Miele Service rather than restarting it over and over.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • You find water under or around the machine: Miele says this is a technical fault you can't remedy yourself, so book a repair. A technician has to find and fix the leak source inside the cabinet.
  • F220 keeps coming back even though the machine is dry: contact Miele Service, since the leak sensing or software needs checking.
  • Your machine isn't on Wi-Fi and you need the software update Miele mentions: Miele Service handles that.
  • The machine is under warranty or extended cover: use Miele Service first.
