Miele Washer F53: Drum Drive Fault (Meaning, Causes, What to Do)
What the code means
Miele's support pages in the US, UK and Australia all describe F53 the same way: "Technical fault. There is a fault with the drum drive." They add that it is a fault you cannot remedy yourself and ask you to book a repair. Miele's Technical Information for its Touchtronic washers (W1113 series) goes into more detail. There, F53 is listed as a "Tachogenerator fault". The tachogenerator is a speed sensor on the motor that tells the electronics how fast the motor is turning. When F53 is set, the display shows three dashes, the motor doesn't start or switches off after about 1.5 seconds, and in the spin cycle the program ends immediately. The water intake valves close and the drain pump runs for 120 seconds. The manual gives the cause as no signal from the tachogenerator and/or the motor drive not working, and the remedy as checking the tachogenerator and main motor circuits and checking for faulty mechanical components. F53 on a washer is not the same as F51 (a pressure sensor fault) or F63 (a water intake fault).
Likely causes
- No signal from the tachogenerator, the speed sensor on the motor (Miele's technical manual)
- A fault in the main motor or its circuit, so the drum isn't being driven
- A loose, damaged or corroded connection in the motor or tachogenerator wiring
- A faulty mechanical part in the drive, such as something stopping the drum from turning or a problem with the motor drive (the manual says to check for faulty mechanical components)
- Less often, a fault in the electronics that power and control the motor
Safe DIY checks
Always unplug the washer before opening the door after a fault or reaching into the drum. The motor, its speed sensor and the electronics carry mains voltage, so testing or replacing them is a job for a trained technician.
- Write down exactly when F53 appears (at the start, during washing or at spin) and what the machine does. The technician will want to know.
- Switch the machine off and unplug it before touching anything.
- Once any water has drained and the door opens, take the laundry out and check that the drum turns freely by hand. Look for an item caught between the drum and the door seal.
- Don't take the panels off or test the motor yourself. Miele says F53 is a technical fault you can't remedy yourself.
- Book a repair with Miele Service (US 888-996-4353) or a qualified technician, and have the model and serial number from the rating plate ready.
๐ When to call a pro
- Any F53: Miele's support pages say to book a repair appointment.
- The technician checks the tachogenerator and main motor circuits, following Miele's technical manual, including plugs and wiring between the motor and the electronics.
- The wiring and tachogenerator test fine: the technician checks the motor itself and the mechanical drive parts for faults.
- Motor and sensor are both fine: the motor control electronics are checked next.
- The machine is under warranty or extended cover: use Miele Service first.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Washer drive motor
Only if a technician finds the motor or its built-in speed sensor (tachogenerator) has failed. Match the part number to your exact model.
Search eBay โWasher motor wiring harness
Only if the technician finds a damaged or corroded section of the motor or tachogenerator wiring.
Search eBay โMultimeter
For a technician's checks on the motor and tachogenerator circuits with the machine unplugged.
