Samsung Dryer Error Code 3C (3E): Motor Error, Drum Won't Turn (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Samsung US lists 3C as a Motor Error, and Samsung UK and Australia list 3C and 3E together as a problem with the inverter motor. In other words, the dryer tried to turn the drum and the motor didn't run, or didn't run at the speed the control expected. Samsung Russia's dedicated 3C page names four causes: low or unstable supply voltage, an incorrect power connection (such as an extension cord or shared outlet), an overloaded drum, and a fault in the motor or its speed sensor. Some models show numbered versions such as 3C1 through 3C8; Appliance Aid's Samsung heat-pump dryer chart lists 3C1 as an overloaded drum and the other 3C numbers as drive motor faults. Don't confuse 3C with HC (overheating) or with the vent test results Cg, C80 and C90.
Likely causes
- Too much laundry, or one heavy item like a comforter, quilt or down jacket, so the motor can't turn the drum (Samsung Russia; 3C1 on some models)
- Low or unstable supply voltage
- The dryer is plugged into an extension cord, adapter or shared outlet instead of its own outlet
- Worn drive parts such as the belt, or a problem with the drive motor or its speed sensor
- Loose wiring between the motor and its inverter control board, or a failed inverter board
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Turn the dryer off for 2 to 3 minutes, turn it back on, and restart the cycle. This is Samsung's first step for 3C.
- Look at what's in the drum. If it's a full load or a single heavy item like a comforter or blanket, take most of it out and run the same cycle with just 3 or 4 light items, like T-shirts, as Samsung Russia recommends.
- Make sure the dryer is plugged straight into its own wall outlet. Remove any extension cord or adapter, and unplug anything else sharing that outlet.
- If 3C doesn't come back with a small load, the dryer is fine. Samsung says the earlier error was likely low voltage or an overloaded drum, so dry big, heavy items one at a time.
- Check that Child Lock is off and the door is fully closed, then use Samsung's start test: choose Time Dry, hold Start, and confirm the timer counts down. If it counts down but the drum doesn't turn, service is needed.
🛠 When to call a pro
- 3C comes back even with only 3 or 4 light items in the drum. Samsung says to contact service at that point.
- You suspect low or unstable voltage at the outlet. Have an electrician check the supply.
- The drum won't turn by hand, makes grinding or squealing noises, or you smell burning. Stop using the dryer.
- Checking the belt, motor, motor wiring or the inverter board. That means opening the cabinet, so unplug the dryer first and leave it to a technician if you aren't comfortable with appliance repair.
