Maytag Dryer F7E1: Motor System Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Maytag's Product Help lists F7 E1 as "Motor System" and says there may be a problem with the motor, control, or the associated wiring. Whirlpool's Product Help gives the same meaning for Whirlpool dryers. The motor turns the drum (and on most models the blower), so this code usually comes with a drum that won't turn or a dryer that stops soon after starting. Maytag and Whirlpool's dryer technical manual W11416805 does not list F7E1 by name, but its Motor Circuit test describes the parts that make up the motor system: the drum belt, door switch, wiring harness and connections, thermal fuse, drive motor, belt switch (gas models), motor capacitors, centrifugal switch and the main control (ACU).
Likely causes
- A broken, loose or worn drum belt (the technical manual says to check for this first)
- Something stopping the drum from turning, such as a jammed item or a stiff drum
- A door switch problem, which is part of the motor circuit on these dryers
- An open thermal fuse on electric models and 27-inch gas models, which cuts power to the motor
- Loose or damaged wiring or connectors between the control and the motor
- On gas dryers, a faulty belt switch
- A failed drive motor (main or start winding out of range)
- Less often, a faulty main control (ACU)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Turn the dryer off at the circuit breaker for one minute, then turn it back on, as Maytag directs.
- Start a timed dry cycle and watch the dryer for one minute to see whether F7E1 comes back.
- Take out any heavy or bulky load and try again with a normal load.
- Unplug the dryer, open the door and turn the drum by hand. It should turn with steady resistance. If it spins with no resistance at all, the drum belt is probably broken.
- Make sure the door closes fully and latches, since the door switch sits in the motor circuit.
- If the code keeps returning, call Maytag at 1-800-344-1274 or a technician.
๐ When to call a pro
- F7E1 returns after the one-minute breaker reset.
- The drum won't turn, turns freely with no belt tension, or you hear the motor hum without the drum moving.
- Testing the motor circuit, which per the technical manual means removing the console and front panel and measuring the circuit at the control (1 to 6 ohms on the covered models) and the motor's main and start windings.
- Replacing the drum belt, thermal fuse, door switch, belt switch, drive motor or main control.
- The dryer is under warranty.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Dryer drum belt
The first thing to check when the drum won't turn. Match the belt to your model number.
Search eBay โDigital multimeter
For a technician or confident DIYer testing the thermal fuse, door switch and motor windings with the dryer unplugged.
Search eBay โDryer drive motor
Only if the windings test out of range. Match the part to your model number.
Search eBay โDryer control board
Last resort, only after the belt, switches, wiring and motor test good.
