Flashing check engine light: what it means and what to do
What it means
- The Wisconsin inspection program says a flashing light indicates a rather severe level of engine misfire.
- Severe misfire over even a short period can seriously damage emission parts, especially the catalytic converter.
- Mazda's manual says to park in a safe place immediately and contact a dealer, and not to drive at high speed while the light stays on or flashes.
What to do
- Slow down, avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads.
- Pull over when it's safe. Consider towing rather than driving far.
- Read the codes. Expect P0300–P0308 misfire codes (see our P0300 guide).
- Don't disconnect the battery while the light is flashing (Mazda's warning).
