Oil pressure warning light: what it means and what to do
What it means
- Mazda: the light indicates low engine oil pressure. Don't run the engine if oil pressure is low, because it could result in extensive engine damage.
- Volkswagen: a red oil pressure light means stop the car as soon as it's safe, switch off the engine and don't restart it until you've checked.
What to do
- Pull over safely and turn the engine off.
- Mazda says to wait about 5 minutes for the oil to drain back, then check the level on level ground.
- If it's low, add the correct oil without overfilling. If the light stays on with a correct oil level, or after adding oil, don't drive. Have the car towed.
- Brakes and oil pressure warnings need immediate attention. Don't 'limp home' on them.
