P0401: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow Insufficient Detected (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What P0401 means
The EGR system feeds a small amount of exhaust back into the engine. That lowers combustion temperature and pressure to control oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Typical systems have an EGR valve, an actuator solenoid and a differential pressure feedback (DPFE) sensor. Together they set how much exhaust gets recirculated. P0401 means OBD detected too little EGR flow.
Severity: can I keep driving?
Drive with caution, fix soon
Usually drivable short-term, but you may get pinging (knock) under load or at higher speed. Get it fixed reasonably soon.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging (spark knock) on acceleration, under load or at higher speeds. In most cases, though, drivers notice nothing (RepairPal).
Likely causes
Roughly most to least common, based on the sources below. Your vehicle may differ.
- Blocked EGR tube or passages, usually carbon buildup (both sources)
- Faulty EGR valve
- Faulty DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor
- Lack of vacuum or electrical signal to the EGR valve, or a faulty EGR vacuum supply solenoid
- Faulty EGR feedback sensor: MAP sensor, EGR valve position (EVP) sensor or EGR temperature sensor (RepairPal)
Diagnostic steps you can do
Work on a cool engine, parked on level ground with the parking brake set. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
- Check the vacuum hoses to the EGR valve for cracks or disconnection.
- With the engine idling, use a hand vacuum pump to open a vacuum-operated EGR valve. The idle should change noticeably. If it doesn't, the passages may be blocked.
- Remove and clean carbon deposits from the EGR valve and tube.
- With a multimeter and your repair manual, check the DPFE sensor voltage against spec.
Typical fixes
- Clean the EGR valve and passages
- Replace the DPFE sensor (OBD-Codes.com suggests a good-quality or OEM part)
- Replace the EGR valve
- Repair the vacuum supply
Repair costs vary widely by vehicle, region, parts brand and shop, so we don't quote prices. Get a written estimate after diagnosis.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The EGR is electronically controlled and needs scan-tool commands to test
- Passages inside the intake are clogged and need disassembly

Plain search links. Always match parts to your exact year, make, model and engine.
FAQs
Will a new EGR valve fix P0401?
Not always. OBD-Codes.com says people often replace the valve only to have the code come back. Check the passages and the DPFE sensor too.
