P0411: Secondary Air Injection Incorrect Flow (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 · Based on 2 cited source(s)

What P0411 means

Secondary air injection is an emissions system that pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifold or exhaust ports for a short time after a cold start. The extra air helps burn off the rich exhaust a cold engine makes, cutting hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The air comes from a pump (electric, or belt-driven on some engines), passes through a cutoff or air management valve that the PCM opens with vacuum or electrically, and goes through a check valve that keeps exhaust gas from flowing back into the pump (OBD-Codes.com, RepairPal). P0411 is a generic OBD-II code. The two sources describe the self-test a little differently. OBD-Codes.com says the PCM switches the system on and expects short-term fuel trims to rise within a few seconds as the oxygen sensors see the extra air as a lean condition. RepairPal says the PCM expects the front oxygen sensor voltage to drop, to under about 0.125 volts on a cold start, and sets P0411 when it doesn't drop enough. Related codes include P0410 (system malfunction) and P0412 through P0419 (switching valve and control circuits).

Severity: can I keep driving?

Drive with caution, fix soon

Get this checked within a reasonable time. RepairPal rates P0411 'Moderate', meaning it may not threaten safety right away but should be diagnosed soon. Often the only sign is the check engine light, but the car may fail an emissions inspection while the code is set. If you hear exhaust backfiring or a squealing belt, have it looked at sooner.

Common symptoms

Likely causes

Roughly most to least common, based on the sources below. Your vehicle may differ.

  1. Faulty secondary air pump or air pump relay (RepairPal); OBD-Codes.com also lists a failed air pump clutch on clutch-driven pumps
  2. Defective or carbon-restricted air management (cutoff) valve (RepairPal)
  3. Damaged or missing check valve (OBD-Codes.com)
  4. Faulty air control solenoid or damaged vacuum lines (RepairPal)
  5. Air pump intake port plugged or damaged (OBD-Codes.com)
  6. System passages restricted or plugged with carbon (RepairPal)
  7. Holes or damage in exhaust components or the air line to the exhaust (OBD-Codes.com)

Diagnostic steps you can do

⚠ Before you start

Work on a cool engine, parked on level ground with the parking brake set. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.

  1. On a stone-cold start, listen under the hood. RepairPal says the pump should start after about 5 to 10 seconds and sounds like a vacuum cleaner. If you hear nothing, the pump or its relay is the first suspect.
  2. Pull the air pump relay and look for discoloration or melting, and check the fuse for the pump circuit (OBD-Codes.com).
  3. Inspect the rubber hoses, vacuum lines and metal air pipes for cracks, holes or disconnections, and check the exhaust near the air inlet for leaks (both sources).
  4. With a scan tool that can command the air pump, turn it on with the key on and engine off and confirm it runs (OBD-Codes.com).
  5. With a live-data scan tool on a cold start, watch the front oxygen sensor voltage or short-term fuel trims when the pump kicks in. No change means the air isn't reaching the exhaust.

Typical fixes

Repair costs vary widely by vehicle, region, parts brand and shop, so we don't quote prices. Get a written estimate after diagnosis.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The pump runs but the oxygen sensors or fuel trims still don't respond, which points to a restricted valve or carbon-plugged passages that can be hard to reach
  • You need wiring or vacuum checks at the relay, pump and solenoid with a meter or vacuum pump (OBD-Codes.com walks through these tests)
  • On a V6 or V8 where both banks respond unevenly; RepairPal notes that on GM vehicles the check valves must be replaced as a set or the code keeps coming back
  • RepairPal warns that the air pump is often replaced when the relay was the real problem, so get it tested first

FAQs

Is it safe to drive with P0411?

RepairPal rates it 'Moderate'. Many cars show no symptom other than the check engine light, but get it diagnosed within a reasonable time, and expect it to cause an emissions inspection failure while the light is on.

Why does the secondary air pump only run right after a cold start?

Both sources explain that the system adds air to burn off the rich exhaust a cold engine produces. Once the engine warms up it isn't needed, so the PCM shuts the pump off.

Should I replace the air pump for P0411?

Not before testing. RepairPal says the pump is commonly replaced when the relay was at fault, and that restricted air management valves or carbon-plugged passages often cause this code.

How much does it cost to fix P0411?

Neither source gives a repair cost. It can range from a relay, fuse or vacuum hose to a new air pump or valves, so get a diagnosis and a written estimate first.
