P0826: Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 · Based on 4 cited source(s)

What P0826 means

Many automatic transmissions and CVTs let the driver pick gears by tapping the shifter to + or -, or with paddles. The control module watches the up and down switch signals and sets P0826 when they don't make sense. RepairPal (which calls it Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit) says the code sets if the downshift switch doesn't work correctly, and the tap-shift function is then disabled. The sources describe the set condition differently. The 2007 Jeep Compass and Patriot factory service manual (CVT, AutoStick) says the transmission control module (TCM) sets P0826 when it sees upshift and downshift requested at the same time in Drive, or an upshift or downshift request when the shifter is not in Drive, for 1 second, monitored with the ignition on and system voltage between 9 and 16 volts. Mitsubishi's 2019 service information (group 23A) calls it Shift Switch Assembly System and says the TCM sets it when the shift switch input stays abnormal for 1 second. On the Nissan Maxima, the manual mode switch and paddle shifters report to the combination meter (instrument cluster), which passes the signals to the TCM over the CAN data network, so the instrument cluster and its wiring are part of the circuit. Exact tests, specs and which module sets the code vary by make, model and transmission.

Severity: can I keep driving?

Drive with caution, fix soon

Get it checked soon. RepairPal rates P0826 Urgent, and says the tap-shift (manual shift) function will be disabled. None of the sources describes the code itself damaging the transmission, but a shift switch that sends a false up or down request can make the transmission behave unexpectedly, so don't ignore it. If the car starts shifting on its own or won't shift normally in Drive, have it diagnosed before driving further.

Common symptoms

Likely causes

Roughly most to least common, based on the sources below. Your vehicle may differ.

  1. Faulty up/down shift switch or shift lever (selector) assembly (all sources)
  2. Up or down switch signal wire shorted to ground (Jeep manual), or open or shorted wiring between the switch and the TCM (Mitsubishi)
  3. Damaged, corroded or loose connectors or pushed-out terminals (Jeep and Mitsubishi manuals)
  4. Bad ground at the shift switch assembly (Mitsubishi and Nissan manuals)
  5. On the Nissan Maxima, a fault in the paddle shifter or in the wiring to the combination meter
  6. Faulty TCM or PCM, as a last step (all sources)
  7. The sources differ: RepairPal names the PCM, shift lever and wiring, while the factory manuals point mainly to the switch, wiring and connectors and replace the TCM only after those test good

Diagnostic steps you can do

⚠ Before you start

Work on a cool engine, parked on level ground with the parking brake set. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.

  1. Read all transmission codes, not just engine codes, and fix any network or power codes first. The Jeep manual says to run the CVT pre-diagnostic procedure before chasing P0826.
  2. With a scan tool that reads transmission data, watch the upshift and downshift switch status while the shifter sits in the center of the manual gate. If either reads active without being pressed, that switch or its wire is the likely problem (Jeep manual).
  3. Tap the shifter or paddles up and down and confirm each press shows up on the scan tool, as both the Jeep and Mitsubishi procedures direct.
  4. Look for spilled drinks or debris around the shifter, and inspect the shift lever connector and wiring for damage or corrosion.

Typical fixes

Repair costs vary widely by vehicle, region, parts brand and shop, so we don't quote prices. Get a written estimate after diagnosis.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The transmission shifts on its own, won't shift normally, or other transmission codes are stored
  • Testing needs a scan tool that reads transmission data; the Jeep manual disconnects the shift lever connector and checks whether the stuck signal clears, then checks the signal wire for a short to ground (below 5 ohms means shorted)
  • On the Nissan Maxima the signals pass through the instrument cluster over CAN, so diagnosis may involve the cluster and network
  • Specs and pin numbers differ by vehicle, so use your car's service information

FAQs

Is P0826 serious?

RepairPal rates it Urgent. Its main effect in the sources is that manual (tap) shifting is disabled, but a switch sending false shift requests can affect how the transmission behaves, so get it diagnosed soon.

Can I still drive with P0826?

The sources don't say the car can't be driven. If it shifts normally in Drive, you can usually get it to a shop. If it shifts erratically, don't drive it further.

What is the up and down shift switch?

It's the switch you use to select gears manually: the + and - positions on the shifter, AutoStick on Chrysler and Jeep, or paddle shifters. The transmission computer reads it to know when you want a higher or lower gear.

Why would P0826 set if I didn't touch the shifter?

The Jeep manual sets it when the computer sees both up and down requested at once, or a shift request when the lever isn't in Drive. A switch or wire shorted to ground can make it look pressed when it isn't.

How much does it cost to fix P0826?

None of the sources gives a repair cost. It ranges from a wiring or connector repair to a new shift lever assembly, so get a diagnosis and a written estimate first.
