Electrolux Dryer E63 Error Code: Heater to Earth Ground (Heating Element Shorted to the Cabinet)

What the code means

Electrolux's Dryer Tech Data Sheets for its electronic-control dryers (for example the EIMED55 sheet and the EIMED60J sheet, part 137265000B) list E63 as "Heater to Earth Ground," with "Heating element or wiring defective" as the possible fault condition. The solution the sheet gives is: "Check heater coils and connections for short circuits to the cabinet. Replace heater and/or wiring and retest." In plain terms, part of the heating circuit is touching the grounded dryer body when it shouldn't be. Typical ways that happens are a coil that has sagged or broken and is touching the heater housing, or a heater wire whose insulation has been pinched, melted or chafed through. The same sheet lists the neighboring heat codes separately: E61 is a heater relay failure on the control board, E64 is the heater open circuit (no heat because the element is broken), E65 is too many high-limit thermostat trips, and E66 is a thermal limiter open circuit. Frigidaire dryers built on the same Electrolux platform use the identical E63 definition. The tech sheet's heater relay and HEAT1/HEAT2/HEAT3 diagnostic steps describe the electric heating element, so E63 is a heater-circuit fault on electric models.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Unplug the dryer or switch off its 240 V breaker. Electrolux's tech sheet carries the warning to disconnect electrical current before servicing, and a heater short to the cabinet is a wiring fault you shouldn't keep running.
  2. If you want to confirm the stored code, Electrolux's tech sheet says to wake the dryer by pressing any button except Cancel, then press and hold Cancel and Start/Pause together for 6 seconds; the last code shows as E plus two digits (E00 means no fault recorded).
  3. Write down the full model and serial number from the label inside the door opening so you or a technician can order the right heater.
  4. Clean the lint screen and check that the exhaust vent and outside hood aren't blocked or crushed. A restricted vent makes the heater run hot, which is a common reason coils sag, so fix airflow before or along with any heater repair.
  5. If you're comfortable with appliance repair and the dryer is unplugged, inspect the heater and its wires for visibly sagging coils, scorch marks, or melted or chafed insulation. That's the check Electrolux's sheet calls for.
  6. If the code was set once and you clear it, watch whether it comes back. Electrolux's tech sheet says stored codes can be cleared in Diagnostic Mode by holding the far-left button under the display and Cancel together for 3 seconds.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • E63 comes back after the code is cleared, or the dryer has no heat or trips its breaker.
  • Testing the heater circuit for a short to the cabinet: with power disconnected, a technician checks the heater coils and connections for continuity to the cabinet, as Electrolux's sheet describes, then replaces the heater and/or wiring and retests.
  • You see burn marks, melted wire insulation or a burning smell. Stop using the dryer until it has been repaired.
  • The dryer is under warranty; use an Electrolux authorized service provider.
